The OD only functions in 3rd gear.
So if you leave the switch 'on', it will gear up normally 1, 2, 3, but when it goes in 3rd it will immediatly go into OD.

what year do you use? and what did you do to the valve body? is it a manual valve body? thanks

Its a early 90s trans... mine is a 3 pin connector
or you can use a single pin connector... do not use
the 7 pin unit.. that requires the computer to control
the trans.. mine is just a regular valve body so it
shifts like a normal trans... but the OD can be left
on in any gear... but its advised to not put a lot
of power to the OD unit... its just a clutch that
engages it with a 900# spring pressure

Just to clarify, what exactly so you mean the OD can be left on in any gear? Do you mean you can just leave it on and it works normally or is the OD engaged along with whatever gear it's in(example 1st + OD)?

Just like your last sentence... 1st + OD or 2nd + OD

I can't split gears ala 2spd rear with mine but it holds 3rd for awhile before going into o/d. Longer than it did in the 91 B-350 it came out of. Patrick @ A&A set mine up. Im sure it has more parasitic loss than a 727 but they did put them behind CTD's so they are somewhat durable.

OD is a separate section... on mine with a separate
switch I can turn it on or off in any gear... as soon
as I get it back together I will take a vid of the
tach while flipping the switch... will that work for you..
I've been playing with it for only about 30 miles
but I had to pull the engine..should be back up and
running in about 3 weeks

A stock set up .. correct... do you have a separate
switch to turn it on... yours could be set up based on
the vac signal... mine is straight electrical

I've put a non-lockup A518 in my '73 Dart and made a seperate electrical switch to turn on the OD, but the only time the OD actually works is when the trans goes into 3rd.
There's no OD-function in first or second gear.

Did you have any other modifications done to your transmission so it's actually somewhat of a 6 speed now?

No.. but I can AND HAVE flipped the switch and seen
the revs jump up... in all 3 gears... why do you
think it would be in third(high gear) only if its
a separate unit of the trans... this trans was a 3
pin with OD and lock up... I changed the pump and
input so it could use a high stall 727 conv.. its a
5000 rpm stall in this unit
EDIT
All I did was use a Trans-go shift kit on this trans
which did have a few minor changes in the VB.. mainly
shift points

You said you had a Transgo kit in your trans Mike. Any chance a stock trans has a valve body interlock that the shift kit bypasses? I know I have read that the non lockup trans can be split shifted for the reasons you posted if you have it switched manually.

and there is a few different ones.. I forget which
I bought but I can find out.. this is the first

Mine is straight electrical also, non lock up. Mine works like Hermans, it goes into o/d after 3rd gear and switching it off and on makes no difference when in second or first.

All I can do is take a video... would that work...
I could be wrong but I just watch the tach.. and
listen to rpm

yeah I have never seen one go into OD until after it is in 3rd, unless there is something about the kit you put in it that changes something in the VB

So would there be anyway to modify the OD to function in a race application as a 4 speed auto with a custom gear set. I have no real knowledge about the transmission but always thought it would be cool to have a 4 speed auto in race application assuming it was viable of course.

The OD cant handle any big power.. its a fairly
small clutch (diameter)

I talked with Larry Shephard of mopar performance way back in the early '90's about using the 518 as a race 4 speed. This was back in the day where you got to stand in line at the nats' and wait to ask Larry one question; accept his knowledge/ or lack of it and move on.

He emphatically said there is no way at that time that it could work as a 4 speed due to the amount of time for the overlap shift going into OD. Today we know that the spring holding the pressure on the OD is far to weak/ and likely many other parts as well. The OD should be used as mopar intended.

And Mike, I really wish you could remember which kit and what you did for mods to this tranny. I am going to use an A500 with a 360 in my build. The experience of others could help.

Too many cars, too many parts, too little coin, too little space to work in, too little time left to make it all happen! Update: down to one ride, still too many parts, a little more jingle in the pocket, gaining space, and it's going to happen this year!
