I wonder if I welded extra "meat" between the center tubes and sanded them flat if that would help?

You have to watch that.. some of the header companies
have the tubes sealed to the flange with that weld
so if you grind it off it MAY be real thin on the seal
between the tube and flange... you can look at where
the weld is located to determine if its there as a
seal to the gasket or to seal the tubes... I dont
put a weld bead on the gasket side as a seal.. I want
them to slide easy... but like I said.. I use 3/8 flanges
to keep them flat

Mr Yuck,

Get yourself a set of Percy's dead soft aluminum multi layer gaskets. I've been using the same set for several years on 2 different engines ; 446 with E-heads and now the 572 with Indy EZ's

Those gaskets have been re-installed at least a dozen times and seal up perfectly.

Fire.. I used the copper ones once and they stunk!. wouldn't seal for anything. the old set of paper I had on the wall worked better. Are the Aluminum ones better?

Yes, waaaay better than the copper junk !

If you can't seal them with a set of Percy's then they can't be sealed.
