I'm thinking of installing a slap stick in my 69 GTX. Just wondering if it's really worth it. What are the advantages?

A slap stick? I thought those were not available in B bodies until 71? Do you want to mod one to fit into your car? I think that shifter would sit a little low with the T handle and all.

In any event, it's more fun than a column shift, and better than a conventional console shift auto, but no replacement for a manual trans. Advantages is it won't let you shift from 1st directly into 3rd. You push the shifter forward from 1 into 2, then after your hand releases pressure off the shifter, it clicks, then you are able to push the shifter from 2 into D, and from there it will not go into N, R or P without pushing in the button.

hi
I retrofitted one into my 71 Abody and I love it.

And for the record, SuprB70's '70 Bee has a stock slapstick in it. As for the shifter, you can shift into neutral without having to push the button.

I like how the slap stick works. If you just place the shifter into the 'D'rive position you can go from drive to neutral without pushing the button, but if you push the button and put the shifter into 1 or 2 it locks out the neutral.
When you start from first gear, you just push forward and the shifter only lets you shift to second gear. Release the forward pressure and push again to go into third/Drive with neutral locked out.

I think someone was selling a kit to convert the earlier shifters to the slap-stick gating?

You can shift from drive to neutral without pushing the button only if you have not engaged second or first. Once either of these lower gears is engaged, and then you shift into drive, you are locked in drive, until you press the button, at which time you can only shift back & forth between drive & neutral.
Just curious. I thought that the 70 B-bodies were not available with Slap Stik. Wasn't 71 the first year?

I just took a B&M quicksilver rachet shifter out of my car that I modifed with a custom machined shift mechanism and bent/polished SS stick. It fit under the stock A body console and used the stock woodgrain knob. Looked dead stock but was a full ratchet shifter and worked great. I used the Quicksilver since it doesn't have a lockout lever.

A body shifters are the same as pre 71 B body shifters right?? I'll take some pics of what I did.

You can convert an earlier console shifter to a lock out / gated shifter ( not a slap stick in operation). Dunacn Engineering sels a kit for $35-$40. Easy mod and works well.

Heres what I did.

The Quicksilver flat stick was duplicated out of steel with the required pins and holes and a shaft of polished stainless welded to it. It fits under the stock A body console and looks stock.

Although a real '73 Roadrunner, mine originally had a column shift. No way, I said, so I installed the proper column, the proper Slap Stik brackets, and then the Slap Stik. It has a real meaty feel to it, which can't be described until felt........the shifts from 1 to 2, and 2 to 3 are positive and firm. Correctness? Technically it is wrong for my car, although offered.......but it is mine, and only tag readers would ever pick up on it.........in your case it is your car, you can always switch it back.

Do you have a console in your GTX?

I was thinking about adding an automatic shifter to my 69 RR, but I think it would be awkward with my bench seat. It seems like too far a reach, plus I really don't like the look of auto shifters.

Yes, I have a console. And it would look stock when I'm finished. Just wondering if it would be worth the effort.

Heck ya!! My Challenger was originally Slap Stick equipped before I put in the four speed, and it was fun! ...except for one time, the first night I got the car...

I left a friend's house, showing off, put the pedal to the wood, was doing about 50 through the neighborhood, banged the slap stick up. Turned out, the mechanism (or something) was kinda worn out, and it went past second, third, and neutral, all the way into reverse.

The Dodge lurched and started sliding, kinda forward and sideways towards a Lexus parked on the side of the street. I grabbed the wheel with one hand and cranked it to the left and with the other hand pulled the slap stick back down into first and slammed on the accelerator. The Challenger came out of the slide and shot forward, probably inches away from slamming into some random person's parked car.

I swear my buddy riding with me almost soiled himself, and I couldn't believe I came so close to wrecking my Challenger the first night I had it.

I still have the shifter and all the related brackets and junk, after I find a set of buckets I think I'm going to put it into a Satellite I recently bought.

Hi I asked this question before but did not get any definite answer. My barracuda has a 904 auto console on the floor but does not say "slapstik". Whats the difference? Can I make it a slapstik?
