yes & a few valve train expenditures but definitely worth it.

I have a mismatched set of "587" and "915" 360 heads under the bench in my garage I practically can't give away...they came on the 360 I bought, which I switched to magnums because of the 8:1 pistons.

I can tell you one thing, I have some magnum heads that i literally just pulled off a '96 ram van and installed the r/t springs, bolted them on with the right stuff and the thing runs ridiculous....It probably easily makes 350hp with a Summit K6901 cam (small!!!) and an Edelbrock Air Gap on a 360.

I just did that with an 1974 318. Couple of issues that I learned are.

Go with 360 vortec heads. These are the heart shaped champers. They give you a better fuel mix in the chamber.
To get compression up I shaved .40 off the heads and ported them to the intake. Otherwise you will lose power just bolting the 360 heads up to the 318 block.

If you use Magnum heads make sure they fit the intake that you got. Contrary to what you read they do not all just bolt up.
I have a older eldebrock performer intake maifold and I wanted to use newer magnum heads. But they would not bolt right up to old intake. The Bolt hole angles are different between the heads and the intake.

I added a hotter cam, oversized pistons 30 and MSD distributor, 600cfm carb with the older eldebrock performer intake.

Got 293 hp on the dyno.

Also noticed a 40hp drop using regular exhaust manifolds instead of performance headers.

I went with the 318 over the 360 one because I had it and knew it wasn't in too bad of shape, you do not have to change motor mounts and 318 is internally balanced vs the 360.

hope this helps and good luck

Sounds like someone just came over from chevy land

Chrysler never made a vortec head. The magnum is kind of an equivelent in the mopar world but they have a way better chamber than a chevy vortec and flow even more. If the magnum heads are not what are being refered to as "vortecs" then who knows what is. The magnum is the only factory SB head with the heart shaped chambers.

You can use any old small block intake on a magnum head IF you redrill and tap the intake bolt holes in the head.

BTW No problem useing those two mismatched heads.

My 323" 4spd 4dr has the standard 340"'s hp camshaft(.430/.444), and areohead 318 milled heads w/ factory iron adjustables, streetmaster edelbrock SP intake and stiff springed 770SA holley. The exhaust is summit headers and summit cheap mufflers ,with a 3.23 gear set in back. Has the "classic mopar muscle car" idle sound.

With a RPM manifold and 600 holley it made 237 rwhp.

It pulls the same as the first 4 gears of a 90's 5spd 5.0L mustang. My 323" is pretty impressive for a daily beater.

My pistons were .060+/- down in the hole. The Aerohead performance 130cc 318 port (051?) 1.88/1.60 heads had 72 cc chambers, and could be angle milled (with an optional reset of the piston valve reliefs) , to the low 60's. You could make 8.8-9:1 compression easily with a 318 stock bottom. Most people are going to rebuild the heads anyways. I say why not?

If you keep the RPMs under 5200-5500, its plenty. Have fun in the 14's, and smoking the 225/60 series tires. Make sure you know how to set up a advance w/ vacuum can, and set up a carb for street driving

Better yet, for the same price as the rebuilt milled/ported Aerohead 318 heads($500), you can buy Magnum rebuilt heads complete. Aquire the PP airgap RPM copy, that works for both LA and magnum heads, is about $150 bucks. Get the pushrods, and your in bussiness with as much as 75 more hp.

looky here, it's sleeping...

if you go with the mag heads, you can get a crosswinds intake that will fit both the LA head or the Magnum..

Heres what i would do.. 318+magnum heads+crosswinds intake, comp cam xe262 or 268H, a 650 carb, headers, a TC to mach the cam, and new lifters, and proper legnth pushrods and matching Valve springs, timing chain with a tensioner.

you can get re-man mag heads from CMengines.com or new ones from engine quest.

or if u wanna go cheap, 318+used 360heads milled a bunch, then you may need the intake serface milled as well. .028 head gasket, try to get a least 9.0 CR (talk to your shop) a 360 4 brrl TQ intake,or a rpm airgap or a crosswinds intake, a xe262 cam or a repo 340 stick shift cam and new lifters and springs, 360 exhuast manifolds or headers.

I did this on a 68 318, the pistons on the 68 were flat tops with 4 valve reliefs. I think yours will be different.

next one i do will be a LA magnum hybrid

Rick what manifolds were you using? I'm considering using 68-70 340 HP ones

they are vertually the same heads with different casting number. 915 used through 72 abd the 587 in 73 for a couple of years. No real difference. You would never tell the difference using them together.
