I was reading about the fluid needed but 20$ a quart? 1004 to refill! well gone to far now to skimp on the fluid it needs. from what I can tell this is the early one with the syncronized 1st & revs gears. light duty with a 19 spline input shaft/727 out put shaft/yoke. may have a 1st gear thats not as low as the standerd duty/heavy duty 4500..from what I have read anyways. I suppose I can count the turns of the input to turns of the output to see what the 1st gear ratio is?...correct? wish I knew what gear was behind it for a correct speedo tooth count. it had 37 tooth short pinion/speed sensor housing that i swaped to the 36 tooth gear/727 housing that I would use with 727-3.91-325/50/15 but need to figure in the OD 5 th gear??? anyone do the math??

The speedo drive gear on the output shaft is after any OD gearing so the pinion calculations will be the same as a 1-1 top gear trans.
Look in the hole where the adapter fits and mark one drive gear tooth with a grease pencil, then turn the output shaft and count the number of drive gear teeth.

check fifthgearrepair.com for the simplest/cheapest way to fix the fifth gear---it is a simple process that an average mechanic can do in less than one hour---the only failures i have heard about are cummins powered units where the tranny is lugged under load in fifth gear--chev 454 and dodge V10 ones dont have the 5th gear issue so i wouldnt suspect your motor will take it down...bob
I agree, i have read the same thing on the 4500HD lugging/diesel/v-10/4x4 5th gear loss.
I read the 5thgearrepair link and it seems to be for the 4500HD 4x4 10/31 input/output spline only.
I am hoping the 4500LD = light duty with a 19 spline input and a 29 or 30 spline output.(I need to count output,I counted the input )
it decodes to a 3.9/5.2/5.9 gas engine so it may be good to go with no problems, it is low milage under 100,000.

My truck has an nv4500, mine shifts very smooth. It's not a short throw like a car, but other than some newer 6 speed trucks I drove... it's the smooth shifting trans I ever shifted.
On the fluid, I'd stick with the factory stuff. Amsoil I believe makes a substitute, but to save 4-5 bucks a quart, think I'd pass. Some places offer the factory style stuff in gallons for much cheaper... but never seem to have any on stock.

got pics of the shifter end for a a535 trans. whoo hooo! member shortbed88 has a complete D-100 hydro clutch a535 set up, he was nice enuff to pull the shifter and get me pics. this is a gold nugget shifter if anyone finds one. the flats on the side of the ball with no plastic cup sets it apart, it has a thin middle rail 3-4 gear 1-2 ans r-5 gears are the bigger lugs on either side of 3-4 rail. pics are worth a 1000 words when it come to this sort of thing. not many have heard of the a535 much less seen or worked on one.

I scored a 4500 back as well. Was put behind a V6 in an '88 I had. Are there any other non-hydro bells it will bolt up to? I got the hydro bell and slave set but my '78 Club Shortbox I got back will need the mech. linkage.
