I guess some guys gain and some don`t..............Damn Quick, don`t want to go BACKWARDS plus a 400 is apparently only 40-50 lbs heavier than an all steel 360 although you small block guys rarely run iron heads.

My Boys small block street car runs the heavy iron RHS heads and is flying in the 10's while hearing the radio.
On air travel, I would try the age old trick of duct tape on that windshield trim/moldings and other areas that may be trapping air flow. I suspect the lower rear roof slope/side quarter window area to be suspect on your car.
I've made thin aluminum air dams underneath my cars chassis to help with those cross directional chassis braces. I've even made an air dam between my rear bumpers lower edge closing it off to the chassis. Early B-body guys should take a closer look under there and see that this crucial area acts as a in house designed parachute.
The SSHH guys have been known to paint the under bellies with super high gloss black paint to make things more slick.
Wax the car and the wheels, tires.
The front inner wheel well plastic covers may help you more than you think. I would leave them in for now.

Be cool to lower the roof reduce some windshield at same time cutting down on some drag, the roofs are pretty heavy so have one made of fiberglass too

dom: this photo shows the faux grill that was on my valiant when i bought it. i thought it looked funky so i put an original grill in it and it slowed down a tenth so i ended up putting it back in. another racer i know had a 69 charger that he raced and he experienced similar events when he put clear plexiglas over the grill area of the charger. seems the setback grills catch alot of air. maybe you can fab some plexi thta is removeable for street driving? dave

off topic, but yer lookin fer speed, right? I would look into a taller sixpack style scoop, if you are willing to consider it. I don't know exactly how much it is worth, but there are scoops built two inches higher to get above the boundry air layer better.

To find out if he needs more air he can tape some
cardboard to the front of the scoop to bring the inlet
to the front of the hood... with the top edge of the
inlet a bit longer on the top to hang out just a bit..
seal it to the hood... that will pick up more air

I keep looking under mine thinking....'what catches air".... Ever see those little wings in front of the rear fuel dragster tires?

And then there are those air deflectors you see on the side of a few semi trailers nowadays.

Yeah, it's got a smallblock.

Thankxxx 4 the great ideas guys............. I should of kept the 80`s Arrow that I had years ago.........it even had a tag on the door from the Highway Patroll that allowed it to have a V-8 in it but I sold it not knowing how bad ass it would be w/my junk in it. Live n learn so, I`ll start messin w/some of these ideas and my carb guy Ron at PC Carbs said to drill holes in the back of my air pan to let air go through it and that should take care of the vaccum or what ever the hell is happening in that mess. I couldn`t find a 6-pac scoop anywhere that was more than 1" taller than mine so............ Ron also said he would shoot me if a cowl went on my car...........

I saw a Duster that had the vent opening (in front of the windshield) taped/blocked off. I didn't ask what it was worth ET wise, but it might be worth a try.

Make a belly pan to go under the car, from the core support to as close to the firewall as you can, put a flat panel in front of the grill and headlights, you can do that with clear plex, and you will still see both the headlights and grill. Cover the area under the bumper to the volance, let the radiator get it's air from in front of the core support.

My buddies 68 Drag Radial Chevelle runs 7:60's at 165+ in the quarter & we had a starting line incident one time when the car didn't start. The other guy waited patiently for us to get started. Once the track official gave him the go & we finally got it started we did not have enough time to get the removeable deck lid & wing installed & made a pass anyway without them. We won the race & went 2 MPH faster than it ever has. Made me a believer that all of these big wings on the back make no difference. The car is not at speed long enough to notice.

Same as cold85 here.

69 camaro spoiler...~$30 from summit, and made some tubing braces for it. No ET change, but made it feel a whole lot better over 100mph

Sunday I went out for a drive in the wreck, I had the manometer inlet setup under the front of the chassis. I ran it up to about 90-100mph and recorded the readings. At the peak it translated to about 386 lbs. of pressure lifting up on the front wheels. I was going to try it at a bit more speed but had a Milodon 'green gasket' failure. Thankfully it didn't totally blow out but it did pump 2-3 quarts all over the underside of the truck. I've got to make up some kind of air dam.Dave

Even if aero doesn't come into play until after 100 mph - that's still the second half of the track for most everybody that's interested in it.

At 38.5 square feet of frontal area I can tell you I can definately see and feel a difference even at 60mph.Dave

I use to go out to the SCTA (Bonniville top speed racers) races at El Mirage dry lake and talk to some of those racers, there thoughts that aerodynamics didn't come into play under 125 MPH on thier course, one mile running start and timed for a short distance after that At the Salt Flats the course was a lot longer and a lot of the racers would say that anybody can run 125 MPH, some can run 150 MPH and after that(150+ MPH) it is way better to reduce drag than to hop up the motor, they even siad that it took twice the HP to from 150 MPH to 175 MPH I know some formula one airplane racers that basically say the same thing, work on smoothing and reducing the aerodynamic drag to go faster above 150 MPH

I have watched a lot of wind tunnel testing at work
and seen my problem when I hit 130 mph. at that point
the rear of my car started lifting off the ground..
the rear spoiler/wing made a BIG difference... it made
the car stable and picked up 3 mph with just the wing..
I was spinning on top end but didnt know it till
I lost control with a 15 mph head wind(which just
adds to what your car thinks its going)... but my
car is a hatch back with a short trunk area... it was
sucking the car upward... non of these cars were
tested above about 120 mph... thats the reason all
of the prostocks and other QUICK cars test in the tunnel
