I'm not sure about the toilet cleaner, wouldn't that possibly be too corrosive?
You don't leave them in there for a long time , or over night. soak for a few minutes , scrub with a plastic brush and rinse in water. For the stuff you get to use at home might take a little more effort?
But the white vinegar mentioned after I posted sounds like a good alternative , it's not sure acidic , I'll have to give it a try .

Has anyone used RPM (Rust Prevention Magic) to protect the connectors after cleaning them?
Use electric dielectric grease , if the factory used that on them way back then you wouldn't see half the oxidation issues , some car makers use it now .

Some info on the dielectric grease: http://www.wisegeek.org/what-is-dielectric-grease.htmYou can apply generously to the "pockets" in the connectors, the grease is not conductive, and is designed to prevent oxygen, and moister, from corroding or tarnishing the contacts. However I think the author of the page may not be a "car" guy: Quote:
Dielectric grease is widely used as a sealant for spark plugs in gasoline or diesel engines, as well as on the gaskets of multi-pin connectors in the electrical systems of vehicles and boats.
