hate to hear that Mike, don't know how you could end up with low oil pressure unless something is bad wrong like a plug missing plug or really loose bearings or something. I have to fight to keep it low with a stock pump.

I dont know but that engine is coming out.. I'll look
at it but I'm putting in my W-2.. thats been a great
engine for years now.. the W-5 sure ran strong while
it was in there

I did a compression check today on the W-2 in the race
car and like I figured its a sorta low compression
set up... 160 - 170 cranking pressure... even the oil
pressure looked good during cranking.. I pulled that
engine out and its on the stand for a freshen up now...
I'll give it a once over tomorrow to see what it needs
and order parts... then I'll pull the engine in the
Rampage.. hopefully I can be back on the road in a
week or two max

LOL.... sorry for the SLOW road... I pulled one head
off the W-2 this evening... all the TD rockers look
like new.. the roller lifters are in great shape and
the pistons and cyl walls look great(on the one side)..
I'll pull the other head and the pan tomorrow.. I
measured the lift on the cam.. its .030 less than
the W-5 engine but thats fine... the pan on this one
might get cut down.. I'll see if I want to swap pans
or not... so far it looks great.. and I wont have
to buy anything.. I have a set of new rings for this
bore and I am pretty sure I have a set of bearings

I pulled the rest of the engine apart today... the
bearings look like new... the cyl walls look great...
I did find a couple of problems... I had a windage tray
on it and it had 4 or 5 good size cracks in the metal..
no biggie there.. I wont run it... next and probably
a real good thing I opened it up.. I run a KB gear
drive (and do on most of my engines) but the bolt
for the idler had come loose and the idler was wobbling
around.. was getting close to falling off.. that would
have been BAD..... then the block... I forgot that
I did a half fill on it... I dont really like to run
a filled block on the street... if I can find a 340
block in a few days I will change over... if not I
will add a oil cooler.........
So ANYONE near Detroit area have a 340 block with a
stock bore OR a GOOD 4.070 bore... or even a
replacement block... PM me.... time is getting short

I was looking around my stash pile out in the pole
barn... I found a stock bore TA 340 block... it has
a little rust in the bores but I hit it with a bottle
brush and took most of it out.. plus it needs to be
bored to 4.070... I think I'll have it line honed
just to make sure things are good.. I still need to
measure the deck height of the other block and this
one... so far things are looking up

Mike my turbo car has the block 1/2 filled and its been fine on the street. Oil temp has NEVER been over 200 even on long street drives.

No oil cooler, old style pre 68 water pump, e85. I have to cool the turbo with the sane oil too!

Its just a quirk of mine.. I dont like the filled
blocks on the street... by the way.. your dad PMed
me and said he has a block for me... if I wanted it
to get with you to pick it up... I'll let you know
if my block wont work

Mike don't know if you checked comp on the racecar motor yet? But I remember you talking about E-85 and saying yours was 12.xx something.
We were talking about E-85 / octane/comp ratios.
The insides of yours and mine engines are another testimony on E-85.
Good luck on your build, and the adventure that is dragweek CAR LOOKS GREAT!!

I just measured how far down the block filler is..
its 2.9" down at the closest point... it only varies
less than .1 throughout the whole block... I'm gonna
go ahead and use that filled block since its a well
proven block.. I'll just freshen it up... that engine
had cranking pressures between 160 and 170 max(max difference)
so its going back together... I thought the fill
was higher than that when just looking at it.. that
puts the fill about mid cyl... I'll monitor the oil
temps and if need be add a cooler... or might just
add one with a fan thats on a temp switch

I would just go ahead and put an oil cooler with a fan in. A big cooler. If you don't, and you're sitting in an hour long backup on some highway during dragweek and its 90º outside, you'll be wishing you did.

I ordered one up today.. its 13 x 15 with a fan on it..
I'll put a temp switch on it so it comes on at a set
temp.. I'll also add a temp probe in the drain plug
to monitor the oil temp

Cant believe my parts came in from Summit today...
I ordered them last night about 5 pm and they were
here at about 11 this morning... so I'm cleaning the
block and all the parts... I had a couple of spots that
the screen in the intake valley started to lift a bit
so I am gluing them back in place with JB Weld.. so
I have to wait on that to dry.. I'll pull the heads
apart to check them and put new seals on... I think
I'll pull the engine out of the Rampage tomorrow..
I want the oil pan off that engine to go on the new
one... LOL... the Rampage is 1" lower than the race
car... thought things looked close under the Rampage

i am no purist by any means.. but those T/A blocks are very desirable by the guys restoring those cars..
there are lots of non desirable 340/360 blocks for race applications...1 T/A = 3-4 non t/a blocks

Yeah I know.. but thats not why I bought it.. I got
it pretty cheap because it broke a rod and has a small
chip in the bottom of one cyl... no more than a rod
clearance notch.. but they are stronger than a stock
block so I held onto it to use some day
