whats a base price to go roller cam in a stock 440 engine?

parts list?

roller cam
roller lifters
PRs
rockers
springs
retainers

miss anything?

what lifters?

adjustable or non adjustable rockers?

looking at the hughes whiplash roller cam for the 440. got me to thinking if it could fit in the budget for an upgrade on the stock 440 MH cam. I would get it done.

total cost on my 318 was 700$, but was a roller block with slider cam,swaped in used roller valvetrain with a new lunati roller cam.

well worth the $ on that swap for me,150,000 miles later,now in the 2nd JY 318 roller cam engine at almost 0$ cost to swap.

I would like to go roller cam to avoid the wiped lobe worrys. so I need to look at price and what parts are really needed.

I will wager,that most likly they dont make a non adjustable rocker/hydro roller lifter RB combo and it wont be as ez as the SB roller cams swap.

You also need a bronze distributor drive gear and a cam button to keep the cam from walking. If you were using a single bolt gear, you need to upgrade to a 3 bolt timing gear set. You will need adjustable rockers to set the lash/preload depending on if it is solid or hydraulic roller.
Prices vary, so check around at several websites and several brands to get a good idea.

oh yea,forgot the bronze gear.

i am going to go with a hughes whiplash but was hopeing to bump up to roller valvetrain. does not look budget freindly so far.

Dosen't Hughes sell tool steel flat tappet lifters? Probably wouldn't exactly be a cheap way to go but WAY cheaper than a roller and no lifter/lobe worries...

As I understand it most roller cams do not have the fuel pump cam eccentric... so the pump rod would not do a thing.

thanks,I have the elect.pump reg already set up on it now.

looks like I am 600+ short on budget.

so looks like the flat tappet whiplash with a set of lifters,springs is the way to go and use the savings on something else while I dream of a roller cam 440.

I have a comp that has the fuel pump lobe , of course the wrong pushrod was used so it's a little buggered up , I'm going to polish it and give it a shot. I think Comp sells a bronze tipped fuel pump pushrod ?

Andy does the last casting of the pre-World block have the same type of bosses ?? I should buy a pair of lifters and see what is involved

yes, comp does make one. there was a post in the racing forum (or may have been here) a while back about a company that makes a better one. a number of people here chimed in about it, so i bought one, and it's in my engine now.

i can't remember the name of the company, maybe someone else will chime in. post or pm me if you want me to dig it up and i will.

correct. stock 77-440 block.

my 318 is already roller cam so I think I will get a roller whiplash for it and a slider whiplash for my 440 with matching springs to get the choppy chop chop fix with both trucks.

Yes scratchy was talking a stock block , I don't know if there is enough lifter boss to make up something on a stock block but the new $$$ blocks have a lot of material around the lifter bores.

I just ordered a couple of lifters so I can see what needs to be done, I may put a hyd. roller in my Hemi if I can make the lifters work. I'll also play around with them in a 383 .

On a mild hyd roller (220-230 deg) Could stamped steel rockers with made to length pushrods be used? I see the least expensive trustworthy adj rocker arms are about $400.


Keep old mopars alive.

That is what I did, the comp bronze pushrod. Se my post above for the part number and price (from Summit Racing.) So far the HV Carter mechanical fuel pump seems to be working good. I have the reproduction vapor seperator can on the car, and I think I put a filter before the pump.

I will be inspecting the CAT rockers pretty soon to see how they are holding up. These need work before using them. The body where the roller tip is had valve tip locating tabs that needed to be ground down so they would not hit the retainer and locks, I used grade8 hardware and not the bolts that came with the kit. The kit has stock type stamped hold downs, but the tabs on the ends were not stamped well (not 90-degrees to the hold down body), so had to fix that or the rocker would push out of alignment with the valve stem. I was told not to trust the adjusters, and to anneal them before use so they don't break. I also ran a tap and die for the adjusters, nuts, and rocker body so the adjusters would turn smoothly. Strangly, the geometry was pretty good with the rockers, but I don't think I would mess with them again.
