Thanks

Credit to Dave Verna for that...

What I find so amazing is that after all these years, who would have thought that one of the most coveted wheels are these "throw away" steelies?...They do have the look though...

Here is a story some of you might enjoy regarding 450's. And its 100% true.

Guy walks into my shop on a lazy summer saturday. I was just finishing up. He notices some old Mopars around and proceeds to tell me thet he has had an old rim and tire in his garage from the 70's. Said it belonged to a friend who moved away years ago, it was for his Charger. He was going to throw it away but thought I might want it. Figuring it was some old junk I almost told him to just chuck it, but he lived nearby so I said id come and take a look at it. This is what he had ...Yep, an absolutely BRAND NEW spare take out out of a 71 B Body. Almost perfect, never mounted, day 1 condition. Yes I bought it, I am too embarrassed to say what I paid for it.

Makes up for all the times I OVERPAID for junk that wasnt what it was supposed to be I guess.

Great story. Man those things just don't happen often. Every now and then though, something in the hobby presents itself to the diehard enthusiast that keeps the mojo going. I believe we have all had our share of bum deals but certainly stories such as this and others like it have presented themselves to the mopar faithful. It is situations like these that we seek and which help push us further towards the insanity.

My ultimate story was being offered a complete 1970 roadrunner - matching number six pack 4 speed with some really great options... for 1K. I have owned it going on 16 years now.

I have a twin to that wheel Mike. I "bought" it though. I use it for ballast mostly

I have one too...a new 450 wheel, and G60X15 Polyglas from the trunk of a '71 Charger R/T. It's never been touched by a lug nut. I wonder how many are still out there unused?

I also have a 450 wheel with G-60-15 tire that came from the trunk of a '71 B-body.

I once collected a set that way back in the early 80's.
While at car shows here and there, when everyone was running Cragars and the like, I would ask guys with hi-po 71 B-bodies if there spare was still there.
After swooning them about how nice their car was, I would occasionally sweet talk them out of it, stating it was not compatible with what they had on the car .
Once at a Quebec show I had to follow a guy almost an hour home in case he got a flat. Paid him $100.00, the most I had ever paid for an untouched 450 with a G-60.

Still need two more 450's for my 70 sixpack R/T. If I dont sell it.

Strange that nobody has reproduced these rims yet. To me they are the coolest wheels on 70-71 B and E bodies.
I know Id' be buying a set.

compare the pic of red wheel posted above with HPMike's pic of a 450. The 450s (and 15" Rallyes) used a 14 inch center. The outer ring has a pretty noticeable step that makes up for the difference in diameter.

Steel wheels and dog dishes look pretty cool regardless. Its one of the detail things.

BTW, the best 450 wheel story I have is junkyarding with a couple friends. It was an old-school junk yard about 4 years ago. We were walking in and my friend spots a polyglas tire and rim laying face down in the mud. He flips it over to see what's there and it was a G60 with a very nice 450 wheel. He got it for $20 if memory serves. It killed me not to have seen it first

We found a couple of nice 69 H-wheels there as well.

I have a '71 383 4 speed Roadrunner with 15X7 rallye wheels that will get my 450 in it's trunk, if I ever get around to restoring the car.

Here's a good story about cheap 450 wheels...

A few years ago I was at the Mopar drags walking with a friend through the race cars parked in the lot. My friend stops and looks at 2 wheels with worn out street slicks laying on the ground. The owner of the wheels walks over and says he will take $50 for the pair because the tires were no good. Two 450 wheels for $50!

Is visual identifacation the only method? Is there a stamping? Or a code to look for?

Basicly they are a 15x7 rallye wheel rim with a regular 14 inch steel wheel center. 14 and 15 inch rallye wheels have the same center.

exactly. Wheel vintiques and others could easily be making them since they already make 15x7 rallyes with the proper outer rim. Even if they used recycled 14 centers with new rims it would be simple enough for them to build them. I think they would sell a bundle. Love how they look with G60 Polygals tires.
Why is it that you see some T/A Challengers with them but I don't recall every seeing AAR Cudas with them?

None of these look like 450's though.

As far as I know there is nothing on the market new that looks like 450 wheels. Been down that road not too long ago. Your only options for something that looks the part are either buy the real thing $$$$$ (or the 71 version $$$$$$ too), or have them made. I took centers from 70 14" rims (common) and put them in Olds 15 x 7 outers after cutting the olds centers out. That is the only way I know of to make them appear correct and not spend the $$$$ on the real thing. I believe you can use Olds Rallys, some Buick Rallys, or some AMC rims. They are the only ones that have the correct drop down to accept the 14" center and appear correct. I have the advantage of owning a machine shop so it was a no brainer for me. I would do a search here as there are others that have been down this road.

In 20 years (okay... lets say 17 as i haven't really bothered much in the last 3) ov flipping though rim piles, looking under cars, looking ON cars, digging though hoarder-asylums, hell... even looking at welded rim-jackstands in the junkyards... i have not once, ever... seen a real 450 rim. I've spent more time around wheels and tires than almost anyone here... I've put out want ads, pictures, i have a LOT ov hotrod punk friends that do the same... Not one in 20 years.... that wasn't on some car at a show anyways.

I've come across 15x8" Ramcharger steelies, tons ov 15x7" rallyes, 15x6" A12 rims, 14x7"? A-body rims (told these were rare?), hell... even the odd Kelsey Hayes aluminum (recalled) rim. Never seen a 450.

I'd love to have them on my car, but i'm not paying idiotic prices for them. Its unfortunate that the other types ov steelies really dont look all that close to the 450... i can spot one a mile away. Makes me wanna just put some mags on my car instead... the 'cheap' (later) 15x7's i have just dont quite look right.
