I actually painted these. I know they are not correct but wanted to give them alittle pop.. Also re-inforced them when I rebuilt the suspension...

I hate this photo.....they look much better in real life. I think the flash from the camera changed things. There not that "gold" in real life and there are plenty of runs in the coatings. I used the Spray Gray and the Black paint on the iron ends for the contrast and then the Mat Clear over everything.

I have done this many times and it last for years.

Now my lower control arms were black from the factory on my 1971 Superbee. Very interesting

I have seen that on 71 B bodys , so you can ignore this thread when it comes to that car ...

Woops sorry John, I just figured that both the 1971 B and E body share so much the same that there might of been some E bodies that had painted lowers, I guess not. Why would one car have painted lowers and another would have cosmoline dip on it? Does not make sense.

For the absolute best powder coating go to J.I.T powder coating, contact infomation is in my personal profile..

I thought about that response and should have asked you this question ... I'm going to edit my reply above ...

Did you buy your car BRAND new ??? If not how do you know what was done to it before you bought it?

It's coming back to me now ... I got a set of arms off a 71 charger R/t that were painted black , I assumed it was like that from the factroy , but when I changed the bushings out it was obvious they were changed already once , hence the black paint. the arms were repainted black when I was finished.

Nope I did not buy the car new (I wish I did though) but when a friend and I pulled the bushings busings and other things off the control arm they were all chassis black that matched the original paint in the k frame and other pieces. Another clue leading that it was original the front suspension had all the original factory pieces still in them and was never apart. My friend who does restos saved the pieces because they were original and I was replacing everything with Moog and prothane (my car will be a driver not a show poodle). While we were tearing the pieces apart we came to the conclusion that the paint was original to the control arms (I at least want the to appear correct) and I had them redone like that. Im not trying to pick a fight or stir the pot I've also heard of other people that on 71 b bodies had black lowers. I just was wondering why they would do that?

Here is a picture of the front end of my Dart. The lower arms were done four years ago using Krylon Battery paint, Matt clear, Spray Gray and flay black. These arms have about 1500 miles on them and there still looking good.

Oh
Troy, I take it you sprayed everything spray grey except the end and that was flat black Correct??
Then you sprayed on the battery protectant and then matte cleared everything, Correct??
I think those look Great and I like the knuckle end being a different color.
Thanks David

I just was wondering why they would do that?

Could be that was how the vendor that made them chose to do it ?

Yes!

In many cases outsourced parts only had to meet a "spec" which often gave the vendor choices on how to reach them. For this instance it's quite possible that some type of temporary rust protection was spec'd out on the prints but the print might not have specified which method to use. Cosmoline or paint might have offered similar protection and therefore either would have been acceptable. The vendor might have chosen either one according to costs.

Happy you like them.

Your close....Iron has many shades to it so I sprayed the ends with spray gray and then darkend them up with a light fog of black. I kept going back and forth from gary and black till I got the color I like. I them added the inspection marks and them sprayed the battery paint.....three or four coats...till it is nice and thick. Then I sprayed the clear.

Thanks for asking, Troy
