I drilled and tapped the block on my 416 in my Rampage and put the filter up towards the front(in front of the right front tire) so it was easy to get at... I had to tap the block to clear my headers and inner fender (here is a pic on the stand)
Mr. P, what holes are your lines running from on the block? Obviously you tapped the return passage, but which hole are you using for outlet from the block and which are you plugging?

I have a question- does it matter whether I use the smaller passage or the larger center passage for the outlet from the block to the filter? the smaller passage is usually plugged, so is there a benefit to leaving that plugged and using the larger hole in the center instead?
The center port (big hole) is the return to the engine... the OD of the filter is always the inlet side, it has greater area to collect trash... the pic of mine I used the center big hole (I might not have it right in the pics,I screwed the lines back on to keep it from leaking)

So the large center hole is the return to the engine from the filter.
But which small port is the inlet to the filter? The one that is already tapped and usually plugged as in the pic i posted, or the small one that has to be tapped to 3/8 npt?

Cool, so the one that is currently plugged with a 3/8 plug will remain plugged then

The 427 small block article in the tech archives that I wrote has some pictures on how to modify the block for external oil lines.
Hey Andy, that would be great to read up on. Is there a copy of the article online? mopar muscle right?

Thanks for the link Dustin, I actually just searched it before you posted it and read it. Looks like I have it all figured out now, just need to decide what fittings I am going to use and pony up to buy some line.
For my filter mount, I can't decide between using a mount that accepts a Fram HP6 style filter, or one that apparently accepts the "standard ford size filter"

i have a kit that came (pre-assembled) with -10 lines. are these big enough? or is the rule bigger is better?
It may be ugly, but it sure is slow.

mshred, I have the HP6 size filter on mine and like it just fine. Threy're pretty large so fitment could be a problem. I buy NAPA filters which will either be NAPA or WIX. Been using them quite a few years and have excellent results. I plumbed mine high under the rear part of the pass side fender. Flip front end gives me access and it's not in the way. I had a pic but I can't find it.
Thanks for the info man! If im not mistaken, the HP6 is the filter used on big blocks right? If so, I have a couple laying around the garage from my dads motor to give me an idea for size (his would be the WIX equivalent).

I drilled and tapped the bottom right passage for the oil filter inlet, and took a good look at the two passages for return into the block, and it got me thinking about which one I should use.
Even though the center large hole is bigger than the 3/8 threaded hole that is usually plugged, the oil has to make quite a sharp turn. I am thinking of plugging the center hole and using the 3/8 hole instead for the return since the oil would be getting a straight shot at the passage....what do you guys think? and what is everyone's reasoning for using either hole?
I know it may not be a big deal, but if im sending oil outside my block I want to restrict its travel in the least amount possible
Matt, that the idea, your on the right track. Take as many 90 deg turns out as possible.

I used the center port because it was there and ready and never had any issue with flow to 8200 rpm but the straight route will work fine also

Anyone know what size the threads are in the large center hole that the oil filter bolt would screw in to? Im wondering what thread count and size I need for a plug for it
3/4 fine. I believe a dampner bolt is the same size. Matt
