Doug, is the folowing correct?

1969 383 4bbl Chargers
XP29H9
w/auto 330 horse (turqouis)
w/auto & A/C 330 horse (turquois)
w/4-spd HP 335 horse (orange)

Dan, from what I've seen:

Yes
Yes
Yes
No- I've yet to run across any 68 or 69 four speed cars with A/C and the HP engine.

Orange '69 383s would be limited to non-AC Roadrunners & SuperBees. The Charger did not offer the 335HP engine. The 335HP engine was limited to Roadrunners & SuperBees without AC according to factory documentation.
440 4-speeds were not available with AC on '68 & '69 models according to factory documentation.
The 440HP cam, which is the same as the 383/335HP cam, is milder in the 440 due to its much larger displacement. I believe the issue with the 383 was one of idle smoothness with the AC on, based on the AC & non-AC Roadrunners I've owned.
The logical point of the orange color would be to hype the performance models where the optional engine was the Street Hemi. With 383 cars, idle quality would override this for warranty-complaint reasons, therefore the 383/330 would be fitted to those cars.
If I recall correctly, 4bbl carbs for AC cars were calibrated differently than non-AC cars and have different #s.
I don't know why a 440 4-speed car was deemed not acceptable with AC, though. I do know that the original owner of a '68 Charger 383 4-speed AC car I owned had tried to order a Charger R/T 440 4-speed with AC and couldn't, so he ordered the 383 (non-R/T) version instead, with the 11" brakes.

This is a commonly held line of thinking and is based on factory issued sales information. It is often repeated in books, magazines and message boards.

It is also incorrect.

If you look at 69 and 70 broadcast sheets and fender tags from Lynch Road cars, you find many examples where non RR's and SB's with four speeds recieved the HP engine.

It's of course possible that a mistake could be made, but I'd like to see those cars. I think there's one '69 Charger on the board that fits that description. But I'll bet that the few that exist don't have AC.
I had a '70 Satellite that had a Coronet 440-badged panel above the glovebox installed at the factory, but it damn sure wasn't supposed to be.
I was friends with a Sales Manager who ordered these cars new, and we discussed this stuff in great detail (also the mistakes like un-ordered extra moldings & such), and I consider him a pretty accurate source, as well as the ton of stuff (ordering, specifications, etc) I've collected from when these cars were new.

There are numerous examples of these cars documented by both BS and LR fender tags.

As stated above, I've yet to run across any 68-69 four speed A/C cars with a documented HP engine assembly. A/C cars got the 330 engine regardless of of model or tranny.

This is a pretty good thread on this topic:

383s - trannys- and A/C engines

It was the gearing. The highest gear ratio for the 440/4 speed was a 3.54. Those compressors were not a high speed unit. Too many RPMs at highway speeds.

Not trying to start a , but I'm afraid I'll go with the fender tag and broadcast sheet proof rather than your buddies recollection from 38 years ago and some factory literature.

I found a factory sheet that spells out the 1969 383 engine codes like this:

This information goes right along with what Doug's been posting from his research.

Geno, that is great information. What is the source?

If you're keeping score at home, here are a couple more that fit with Geno's list:

895 = 383-4 manual LB
896 = 383-4 auto LB

Doug,

I transcribed the info from the:
Sales Code Manual
"E" Series
C.A.G. Prod. Engrg.

Page No. DB-17, if that matters to anyone. I didn't find the A-body engine codes you were listing, as there are some gaps in the stacks of paperwork around here and that's one of them.

If nothing else, it's documentation that shows 383 4-speed non-A/C B-bodies other than RR/Bees were supposed to get the 335HP engine. You've already known that for years though, I know.
