Why are Long Block Hemis (gen2) so expensive??

because it's a Hemi... $ for $ a wedge is a much better value for about 90% of folks here. It can be built for about 1/2 of the Hemi and much less that that R2D2 P7C3pO SB....
I guess you just have to really want it. Like those guys who buy a six-pack...is it better? Not really but it looks cool.

I have built both. I don't see where a comparable wedge costs half as much. Rotating assembles are practically the same cost. Hang on parts are the same. Oiling system is the same/similiar. Cam/lifters are compairable. Hemi head Castings and rocker gear is more expensive. Also the blocks cost more. Unless you have a machine shop in the shed, most of the machine work costs the same. A hemi is worth a lot more money and will give you a much better return on investment. Also the block is much better then a traditional 440 because of the cross bolted mains. Its more money up front, but if you are building a car from scratch the hemi will yield a lot more money on the investment.

a 10.0 440 based motor is much cheaper than a 10.0 Hemi. The Hemi bottom half is about the same but when you start going up the cost jumps...No car is a good investment unless it's a #'s matching car. You aren't going to make any money on a race car no matter the engine.

Just to run though some numbers on 3 previous cars i had.

65 plym belvedere hemi. 35K invested sold for 45K.

68 hemi dart, around 42 K invested sold for 55

64 plymouth belvedere. had 57K invested sold for just under 70K. This car when i first built it had a 500 inch wedge. I tried to sell it for 50k and couldn't get a call to save my life. Sold the wedge, invested that money into a hemi, plus another 11K to make up the difference, and the car sold quickly for 20 grand more.

Not counting my time, which this is a hobby so i don't really count time thats $35,000 profit over three builds. I can gurantee i would not have got near that money if they were wedge cars.

I do agree that you cant make a profit on a "race car" The minute you completly gut a car, go sheetmetal dash, and throw on a personalized paint job the chance at profit is about zero. However well built street / strip cars have shown me a decent return on investment.

Those are not your avg hot-rod. Try making that kind of cash w/ a 318 2bbl 69 coronet or 70 318 2bl dart. Shoot you can't even get 55k for a real 66 Hemi Charger.

The first two went when times were good. I sold the third car in late 2010. The third car took longer to sell. Cars were not selling good at that time. I think i would have done a lot better then on that car if i sold it a few years prior.

Ok this is a good example.

Just saw e-mail traffic of a UnKNown Hemi Builder.

Guy asks what the starting price for a 426 Hemi is.

Reply: My 426 Hemis start at $19000 for a street Hemi and go up from there.

That's a BIT high when there are other Well Known builders out there selling for $5000-6000 below that.

Now race pieces like you guys are showing. Sky is the Limit.

I think the most expensive I have seen was a Jon Kaase Mopar 815cui Hemi for $125,000. OOUCH!!

You can build one cheaper than 19k easily, but this saying comes into play..... good, fast, cheap...you can only pick 2.

My brother, just built a new Hemi using all new parts. He did not buy cheap parts or any used parts (ALL NEW PARTS), but he did make a lot of phone calls to find the best deals on the parts. He paid for the machine work, but he did all of the engine assembly.
He started with a Mopar (World) block from the Chrysler dealer that cost him $2400. He bought Indy HIPO heads for $2400 and Indy Hemi rocker set up.
He used a K-1 crank and Rods and Diamond Pistons. Lots of little parts cost added up. He has less than $14,500 in his 572 Hemi including the cost of the TTI Chrome headers and a Ray Barton tall intake. Of course this does not count his time on the phone or his time in the garage assembling and test fitting everything and then the final assembly after he got it back from the machine shop.
I think you will spend about $2 grand more on a HEMI than a wedge, but the wow factor is worth it to me. The cost difference is in the Heads and rocker set up. Just because they require a little more machine work on the heads/combustion chambers. And the rockers require the use of 2 shafts and 10 rocker stands.
Good luck with yours

I've got about $15k in my 572 with the only used parts being the Keith Black crank and the timing cover.
That includes everything from the air cleaner (67 chrome dome), Edelbrock Carbs and the TTI headers.

It also took several years of searching for deals on parts to build it that cheap.

You can definitely build a stroker big block cheaper but it won't have the WOW factor when people look at it.

Kayse can't keep up at all now. lol

No way!

I have spent more on freight alone than I spent on my 383. but I do live a long long way away.

It is a sickness & it can affect us differently but it does affect us!

I have not added up the receipts. Maybe I won't.
It would probably make me very nervous to race it!

Wise words spoken right here. When building anything on a budget I think anyone would be a little leery about beating on the final product wether being a motor, car or what ever.

I may have more in it than a sane man can justify but I still beat it like a rented mule. Heck, I made 37 full throttle dyno pulls on it before it ever saw a chassis. Dave

I didn't build it to drive slow or put it in a car show.

I will have to give in to my curiosity, and take it to the strip. I have to find out what it will run, as well as what that sounds, and feels
like!
