We had a track outing last thursday at Atco, NJ and I felt it went real well. A little background on my Charger.

This is my new engine with specs:
68 440 block machined and finished .030" , line honed, and decked to yield .000 " deck ht.
440 source 4.25 stroke, kit. with 2.2 journals.
Edelbrock Performer RPM heads milled to 81 to give me 10.4 actual measured compr.
I cleaned up the bowls, guides, and opened up pinch area and gasket matched heads, polished chambers.
Comp Cams custom Solid Flat tappet, 648" @ 272 at .050 ex., 640" @ 268 at .050. (sorry, just corrected dur. specs 10/19/2012) the Lift is with 1.6 rockers.
Harland Sharpes rockers.
Victor 440 Intake gasket matched and smoothed at inlet.
Holley Hp 950 carb jetted at track for open headers.
Hooker 2" super comps with collector extensions.
Tremec Tko 600 5speed transmission
Dana 60 4.30 with Caltracs and adj. shocks
M/T ET Drags 11.0 28 15 On pro stars

Car weight with me in seat is 4080 lbs.

Best time so far was 10.97 @ 126 with a 1.465 60 ft.

I know the et should be alot better with the 126, but I just can't seem to powershift this tranny at high rpm. I have read that this is an issue with this tranny? not makin excuses, just stating.

What do you all think about the combo and time ran with this car weight.?

I run only pump gas 93 octane.
Here is a link to a picture and vid:

Thanks for any comments,
Greg.

If I where you I would be very proud of the cars performance.
Can you shift that trans above 6k?

Nice pic..
I think your car 60ft's good for that weight. From what i've seen, manual trans cars do seem to mph well. As regards the trans, there's people on here, that i'm sure could give you the answers you're looking for.
congrats on the 10, it's the one i chased for a few years and it's very rewarding when you do it.

Can you powershift 2nd even? On my t56 I can powershift 1-4 if I'm on my game if I'm not I have to let off during the 2-3 shift. Very nice you got a ten with that setup regardless.

Nice car and combo I love it!! Nothing wrong with that carb in my book, ran almost the same numbers as my 1050 dominator on same day back to back tests with jetting on a 9 second car, and the 950 was snappier on the street.

Beautiful Charger you should be proud!

I'd love to run a 10.9999. Good job. Not sure why you can't bang the gears at a decent RPM. Old school 4 speeds you could bang them at 6800-7k. That thing hooks well. I guess I need to invest in some cal-tracs and 2" headers! Keep tweaking on it.

Nice launch pic!

You must be "Granny shifting" the he11 outta it to lose that much time between a 1.46 60-ft. and 10.97 @ 126. With my auto-trans junk I'd be .4 quicker w/ the same 60 and MPH.

It's running good, and looking fantastic. Sure there might be some shifting issues as noted, but it seems to me you've done a great job with it. Congrats

Congrats on the 10's. And in my favorite year Charger and she looks great. Nothing like cracking 10's on pump gas. Ron

Very awsome! My car runs the 126 mph and a 60' of 1.48 and a E.T. of 10.57. I would say figure out the shifting and it should go mid tens. I wish mine launched like that! Dang!

What gear lube are you suing in the trans? Do you heat the running gera up some before running it? I know NHRA stocker racers that do that in the pits on jackstands and then drive car to the staging lanes and cool the motor down just before running Also can you swith trans lubes to something slicker that may help make it shift better? I used straight ATF in my NP833 18 spline Hemi trans years ago to help make it shift better I can remember more than one weekend at the track trying to make my car 60 ft. better, yours is much better than mine was back then

Nice charger man! That thing is flying in my opinion, you should be proud!

As for the trans, no you are not making excuses- high rpm shifting issues are common with the TKO's. A friend of mine has a TKO500 in his vette, and at the track, shifting higher than 6200 was like hitting a wall. He called up Libtery, and they sold him a kit of parts (I believe it was a couple of carbon fiber lined synchros, bronze shift cup, and something for the shift rails I believe..) and he installed it all himself...He has driven it since, although not at the track, and he says it goes into gear at high rpms ALOT easier...TKO's are known for this problem, and any of the guys who deal with them (Liberty, Hanlon, etc.) can fix you up with the parts you need, or if you need them to install it, the service as well. When you call just tell what it is you need (the stuff for the TKO to shift higher)...just be careful with sending stuff to Liberty, as I hear you may not see it back for a while

Absolutely awesome car, without a doubt the best B-body ever. I bet you were happier than a pig in poop after getting that 10.97 timeslip!!!

As mshred said, the high rpm shifting problem for 2nd and 3rd gear on the TKO's seems to be common. A few trans places have kits to fix it, some involve faceplating conversions but then it kinda sucks to drive on the street. It's also worth rechecking parallelism & runout on the bellhousing, and the air gap on the clutch.

One of our work cars was a generic Mustang with a 600-ish hp 427 SBF in it, in front of a TKO-600. It was notchy but powershifted like a champ. I think it had been sent to Liberty once to be modified, though.

congratulations, you done good. what are your shift rpms? I never had luck shifting above 6500 with the TKO and it was hit or miss at 6000.

Thanks everyone....I am glad that it is not me with the shifting issue. Most times, it feels like I hit a wall trying to go into the 3rd gate. Just won't go in at all at 6700 . If I slow the shift up some (dropping the rpms) it will go in, but that is killing my et. I will be contacting Liberty for the upgrade parts to install.

Overall, I am real happy with the performance of this motor and proud of it. Thanks again.

I will be attaching the album of the outing with pics and vids for those who asked for more pics.

Greg.

I do always heat the drivetrain up before running driving around the pits for a while. I use the suggested fluid for that tranny, which is GM Synchromesh fluid. Never deviated from it, but maybe I could try something different.

Thanks.

Very happy with this clutch...an No, I don't work for them

You know I dont know much at all about that trans as I only used the Mopar 833 trans when I bracket raced a 4-speed cars years ago. Now I dont want to sound like a wise guy so please dont take this the wrong way as you may already know if it helps or not. But in the early 80's when I was power shifting my 340 Dart with a stock 833 trans that ran high 11's I found it got harder to get it in gear when it hit low 12's and high 11's when I power shifted (you know never lifting the throttle through the full pass). Well since the tranny was stock I tried lifting the throttle a tad when shifting. I did it so fast that as I pushed in the clutch I lifted the gas pedal a tad and then slammed it right back on the floor before the clutch pedal was all the way out. Granted that 340 Dart was a full second slower but it really helped and did not slow down the car at all. I even ran a new best from 11.97 to 11.94 shifting that way and I was one who never wanted to lift the go pedal at all. But I would just do it timed real good with the clutch. As the clutch got slammed in with the left foot the right foot lifted the gas pedal maybe halfway as I slammed the shifter into the next gear the gas pedal was back on the floor before the clutch was all the way back out. It was not alot but it really helped it go in gear easier with that stock tranny and no kidding it did not slow me down one bit. I would shift that 340 about 6500 as it was nothing real fancy. We did not get 60 ft or 1/8 mile times on our time cards back then in the late 70's or early 80's and the car was a 66 Dart I had put a 340 in. Its best run was 11.94 @ 113. Good luck in that sweet Charger as you have the mph for at least 10.70's or better even at 2 tons. Ron

Congrats....awesome car and great working combo. That 60' is impressive for the weight

I have a 68 Charger that just recently squeaked into the 10's (10.99) with a 1.55 60' but i'm also 150lbs heavier @ 4200 raceweight.

Mine ran a 10.99@ 121.5mph and recently has gone as fast as 124 but traction has now become an issue. Might be time to consider some slicks and weight reduction.

Once the trans issues are worked out your's should go mid 10's i would think with that MPH

Once the trans issues are worked out your's should go mid 10's i would think with that MPH

Ron

Ron, Your Charger is GREAT looking. Wow!!
My Charger runs as good as it does thanks to you! I used a Camshaft recomendation that you gave to someone on another board that I kept in my notes. After looking around and listening to everyone talking about cams for a stroker motor, I ended up using a recommendationt that you made for a 512 motor with slightly higher compression 11.5.

Mine is 10.4 , so I modified my LSA to 110 from 114 (I think you spec. for his engine).

If you recall, they were the 7071 and 7073 lobes from Comp solid XX family. I couldn't be happier with the performance.

So, Thank you for your wisdom...I always pay alot of attention to what you say on any post that I see you made.

'Respectfully,
Greg.

That's very respectable.. What clutch is in it?

Thank you...I have a Spec Stage 3+. Absolutely great clutch. Never slipped once with all the runs I have put on it + all the street driving I have on it. Probably around 6-7,000 miles, + 51 track runs.

Very happy with this clutch...an No, I don't work for them

What do you launch at? It's a single rag disc?

I launch at 6,000 and it is a single disc clutch. I think it is carbon metalic or something like that. It is copperish color.

Thanks very much.

New question: the first 5 runs were made with the HP 950 Holley that was jetted up. I reached 10.98 @ 105.8 with that carb. I then switched to a new 1050 dom. 3 circuit jetted up and all 5 runs with this carb was between 105+ to 106.1 MPH. without any jet changes, it ran slightly faster than the tested/jetted 950.

What is your guess to how much I can pick up with more testing/jetting up etc.. The plugs still looked very very light in color.

I think it may have another 2MPH in it. What does your experiences say?

Thanks.
