one of my favorite looks. If I had a car with patina and someone called it a rat rod I'd be insulted. http://rat-rod.us/RatRodPhotoDirectory

An association of men who will not quarrel with one another is a thing which has never yet existed, from the greatest confederacy of nations down to a town meeting or a vestry.

Arno, That is the reason I got into street rods as well, but it was 20 years ago when I made the move. Most people were a lot more friendly back then. These days, seems like everyone wants you to have the same stuff as they have or then start crying or complaining.
A month or so ago, I was at a local fast food park in with my coupe. My car is suppose to resemble an old dirt track race car, but mine doesn't have a roll cage in it, for a number of reasons. One guy stood there and pitched a..er..complaint because of the lack of a cage in my car. A little later that night I ended up at his car, which also gives the impression of an old dirt track race car. His has the race car motor, tires, wheels, and exhaust of a race car, but he too is missing a roll cage. I ask him when he was putting a cage in his car and his response was "I don't want to mess up my nice interior!" I called him on the fact he was just reaming me for not having a cage in my car, but it was OK for him not to have one in his car? What's up with that? He left a few minutes later.
Bottom line, build your car the way you want it. When people feel the need to tell you what you should do with your car (and some will), tell them you expect them to fund the changes and hold your hand out for their cash donation. Most leave pretty quickly.
Don't let the know it alls and the self appointed rod police steal your joy. Just because they live a pityful existence, nothing says you have to join them. Gene

I am a hot rod lover at heart and have spent some time on the HAMB. My avatar there is a '28 Model A "street rod/hot rod" that I had a few years ago, but they didn't castrate me for it. This is the other car that shares space in my garage, which fits nicely into their definition. Though it has flat black primer which a lot of the purists consider "rat rod" and doesn't please some, you can't escape the fact, that's the way it was done when money was scarce. It was cheap and easy to touch up. Very few people had the funds to build a pristine car that some consider to be the romantic model for a traditional rod. My dad and I built it in the same spirit as if he was building it in the 50's with no money (which he did often). It belongs to him, but due to heath reasons, he doesn't drive it any more so I keep it, drive and maintain it for him. I posted this thread over there as a tribute to him and it was generally well received. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=526180

Thanks Gene, Glad to see I'm not alone. I'm building my 34 kind of in the mold of the 60's/early 70's Fuel Altereds. I loved those cars! I have a 70 'Cuda that I used to take to shows but won't anymore. It's never been restored but doesn't qualify for the "survivor" crowd, non original tires and someone changed the belts and hoses. On top of that, people at the shows would only point out whats wrong with the car. OK, rant mode off. Now everyone, go enjoy your cars! Arno

We had a nice day here today, I found a lot of reasons I had to take the coupe out to get something.....
I had a blast rowing through the gears, even if it is only a V6. Got a little cherp from the tires hitting 2nd a couple times Gene

My '56 is satin black, so I hear the Rat Rod comments, too. (the paint is just a placeholder until I get to the point $$ that I can make it shiney). Really, I could give a s***t what some onlooker calls it. But, since I stuffed the 440 in it, I get more comments on the tail lights.

I've seen your car at National Trail several times, always brings a smile. Just my 2 cents but I like the paint.

from what i have seen the HAMB doesnt like any thing shinnny,,,
Check out the Larry Watson thread. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=573932
That is a single example. There are a ton more, but this one shows history and fantastic paint.
There are also threads on all black cars, some of the recent AMBR contenders, old school lowriders and many others that are all about shiny.
I will also mention that there was a thread recently that stated that membership had reached over 200,000 members total (not active). That means a lot of overlap, where they all may have different tastes, backgrounds and interests, but can come together for the (proudly) narrow focus of the site. It also means that there are always guys pushing for the site to spread in all sorts of different directions. So it also happens that some will complain about any perceived O/T post. There are even a couple early van (EEEK!) threads! http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=741096
dont get me wrong, i think the HAMB is a great site with a ton of guys with talent,,but a few years back, there was a guy with an over the top willys, paint chrome,,you name it riddler award quality,,they hammered him like mad made me sick,,,that turned me away from that site,,and the yalso took down my signature pic of my street rod, im guessing because it has shinny rims,,lol

I've been into muscle cars for most of my life but got tired of all the quibbling between the purists, the hot rodders, the pro touring guys, and the guys that say just drive it. I try to appreciate all the different styles although there have been a few cars that make me cringe. I decided to build a street rod because it seemed as though you could do pretty much whatever you wanted and people wouldn't rip on you. I was wrong. Everyone on Moparts has been great and not judgemental but the previously mentioned sites can be rather harsh. Not everyone has been into rods their entire life.
Arno
I currently have a street rod,and a prostreet car,,,i love both, but find my self more intrested and enjoy being at the rod events, rather then the muscle car events these days,,i just love the pre 1960 cars body styles more lately, the rarer the better, and different is kool also
