Which one do you prefer and why? Which shifter do you specifically use? Trying to decide, but have only driven a ratchet equipped reverse pattern car. I am planning on a trans brake reverse manual vb for my own car- does that make a difference to you guys as what you find better?

I have a gated style on the Rampage and a ratchet on
the race car... wish I would have got a ratchet for
the Rampage(I might change it).. both are B&M shifters..
the ratchet is much easier to use but the gate one I
bought looks better(for a street rod)

I had a TA Cheetah gated shifter and hated it. I lost the 4th round just 3 weeks ago pulling from 1st to 3rd, I've done that more than once.

I just installed a B&M Pro Ratchet with a Hurst pistol grip, tried it out last week. I love it, no way you can miss a shift. But some swear by the TA shifter, you need to find a shifter that fits your style.

it's like what flavor ice cream, personally you couldn't give me a gated shifter...well actually you could, i would sell it and use the money towards anything else

Yeah, its all a matter of personal preference. You couldn't give me a ratchet sifter, but some guys love them.

with a reverse pattern gated shifter you would be shifting towards yourself just like a ratchet, right?

My worries with gated shifters- might overshift while pulling back (if possible), and have to grab a lever on some for the 2-3rd gear change which I find kinda weird

I have nothing but trouble with ratchet shifters because of hanging up and it takes both hands to get them free.

If you asked everyone with a gated shifter if they ever unintentionally went 1st to 3rd, nearly every one will admit to it "once or twice". Those odds are not good for me, as I am sure it would happen in the later rounds which I rarely see anyway. I did win a race when my opponent missed the 1-2 shift and went to 3rd.

With a ratchet shifter, it is 1 gear at a time, every time.

Watch the video in my signature, that's absolutley NOT the way to use a Cheetah shifter, you are supposed to slap it...But I just have to grab onto the thing, and that's why it would not work for me.

I went with a Pro Ratchet because you just pull it to shift, no levers to pull, you just pull it one click to shift and the Hurst pistol handle makes it that much better.

my brother bought one of those for his T-400 poncho, but has yet to run it...funky lookin thing, but looks like it would work nice...kinda expensive though. If I was to go gated I was thinking that or a hurst quarter stick

for some reason I have heard a lot of guys say the cheetah is easy to overshift or miss with. I have never seen one in person though to look at the construction of it as to why. Is it much different from other gated shifters?

The TA Cheeetah is an awesome shifter in th right hands. Used correctly you slap it for each shift, there's a spring that moves the lever over into the proper position and you just slap it again...I could never get it right, even tried a couple different gates. In Test and Tune I shifted it perfectly, but put some points and money on the line in the later rounds....

After blowing the last points race I pulled it out, I fought that thing for 3 years...Love the Pro Ratchet

maybe that's my problem. I 'm not a caveman.

I quit using it years ago out of frustration and it's put up. I had another one years earlier that did the same thing and I gave it away.

Went back to pushbuttons('65 tranny) so it's not an issue now.

I've bought, used and race both types of most of the popular brands out there. I now have a used Winters shifters in my Duster and another used Fairbanks for the new race car, 1965 Dart. T/A uses the same basic shifter as the Winters/Fairbanks except they are rear exit cables and sideways mounted shift linkage, it is a H.D. garbage truck shifter to start with(1/4 inch Morse cable, not a 1/8 inch diameter cable :thumb) and then made into a kit for race cars The T/A units are front mounted cable exit and hook onto the shift arms like all the other front shifted cable shifters. I have shifted it into 2nd gear when I left my hand on the shifter handle when I hit the throttle in first gear, probally several other racers on here have also Once you learn to stiffen your arm up enough to take a 1G+ launch your golden I've done the same thing on a ratchet shifter also I have never shifted mine into high gear from first I know of several other Mopar racers that would have bought the new Winters/Fairbanks shifters according to them but they where to much money for them at that time One of them has since replaced his B&M (maybe it was a Hurst) ratchet shifter because he wore it out, in 13YRS+ racing The H.D. truck units don't wear out Bottom line is it is up to you to decide which one you want Good luck

Just watch Pass Time every week and you'll have your answer. It's amazing how many automatic cars miss a shift on that show. I always run the B&M Pro Ratchet, impossible to ever miss a shift.
