Was just thinking about that beautifull car of Rons and wondering how much it would pick up in the 1/4 mile if it had a Victor jr. and a 1050 dommy................I would bet more than the suggested baby carb and street manifold it has now. So Ron, are you in a position or do you even have a desire to make the change? This would be cool for all of us to see and compare et`s which I would bet would go down a bit and let that beast breath w/more even distribution and top end power. Been thinking about this since you built it..............

That`s about what I was thinking maybe more as long as it`s tuned and a wide-band "before and after" comparison would be interesting........... And a quick "BS" on loosing torque and driveability.................

It sure runs good for a mild motor in a heavy car.

No doubt I just think this is one of those cases where the "street" set up is good but a "racier" step up would improve et`s and NOT hurt street manners.............too much time on my hands I guess.

i'd try a bigger carb first.

The easiest way to handicap a dual plane (vs a single plane) is to run the same size carb; a dual plane wants at least another 100 cfm to make it a fair comparison.

The 440-2D is no slouch, especially ported. The lower plenum picks up about 30cfm, out of the box it's about 30 down to the upper. Ported like mine the 2D will flow ~360 cfm.

I offered Ron a virgin 337 single plane and my pro-systems 1000hp 4150 to try. But I'd like him to try just the carb on the dial plane first. I haven't swapped the 337 because I can't convince myself it's worth it on my 517, at least until I go to the 4 speed.

I think Ron needs some new slicks before y'all go testing his car.

I`d just like to see a back to back "real world" test on a known good car and would be willing to bet the open manifold w/a 1050 dommy would improve at least .02 or more................ New tires definately..........

Thanks for thinking of me as I really appreciate the offers. First I do need new slicks which I will have to get over the winter as I just dont have any spare cash right now. The other problem is my hood clearance issue. I dont want to change the scoop as I just dont care for the modern taller version of the Maxie scoop. No offense meant to anyone who uses them but I like the more original look. That said I would love to do what Streetwize said and try the Mopar 337 single plane as from what he said it should fit under my hood and I hear it is a very good single plane intake. And by all means I would love to try a bigger carb. I am very pleased the car has run 10.70's but I do think it has a bit more in it and I will get around to trying the different intakes and carbs but it may take me some time as my back and knees slow me down alot as does a slight lack of cash right now. But you all really have me thinking. I plan to hope I can try some changes next spring and summer. I mean believe me I am a gearhead and as with all of us its never fast enough. So it may take me some time but I most definetly plan to see how much faster it will go with a few changes and good tuning. Since I think the 337 will fit under my hood I would love to try it with a bigger carb. I can try a carb first on the Indy dual plane and then go from there. You can see the height of the Indy dual plane here as I have a 1" spacer under it and it just clears my scoop as I have about a 1/2" to 3/4" room between the carb stud and bottom of the scoop. But I will have to wait until next spring like March or April I hope. As I have to live within my means right now and with Xmas coming sooner then we know it and xmass is going to be tuff enough this year. Hopefully I can get my funds straightened out over the winter and get my case with workers comp straight as I still am paying for my pain meds out of my pocket and I am still trying to get medical insurance. Since I am only 56 it seems you have to be 65 or on disability for 2 years before I can get Medicare. But I am working with a Health insurance through Social Services that I think is free for me on disability with just a co pay for perscriptions. Dont mean to bore you guys with my problems but once I get these few things ironed out I may even be able to save some money. Believe me it hurts to see all these new best et's get posted and me knowing I never even got to the track this year. But my plans are new slicks over the winter and then hope by April I can go to the track and try a few things. I replaced my little Holley red pump with the Firecore 140 pump but I have not been back to the track to see if it helps as the last time out I thought I was not pumping enough fuel with the red pump as I dropped 3 mph when I shifted at 6000. So I shifted the next run at 5700 and picked the 3 mph right back up to almost 125. So I hope the larger fuel pump takes care of that problem. After I ran 10.76 @ 124.49 at Cecil with a 1.50 sixty I went to Capital 2 weeks later and the first run was 11.02 @ 121. So the next pass I short shifted at 5700 and ran 10.83 @ 124.56 but with a 1.54 sixty as I had trouble hooking good that day. But then after looking at the holes in the slicks or lack of them I knew it was time for new slicks. So I hope the new fuel pump and slicks help as well as a single plane and larger carb when I get to try them. I really appreciate all the idea's and help offered. I should know by April next year when I can get to the track and try a few things. Ron

I hear ya about the greenbacks being short and hood clearance really plays a role when you step up to the racier manifolds. Maybe that 337 everyone talks about, a 1050 and a drop base filter.........

Its a basic 850 DP. This pic may give you a better idea of how much room I have under the hood. I still have the choke housing on the 850 but I did remove the choke valve. It has great driveability with the 850 driving on the street but I had to jet it up a good bit from where it was jetted with the old 440 just to run to 6000 without busting up from to lean. I knew I would be jetting up but it was just alot more jetting up then I thought it would take. Ron

I still say 1050 dommy flange EVEN w/an adapter but then hood clearance goes further out the window.........

I dont use that little air cleaner as I put that on for an indoor car show because the old one was actually hitting the hood. Then I got the larger chrome one thats a drop base. I have never uncapped it either but it is a 3" X-pipe system with Ultra-Flows out to the rear bumber and I believe it flows pretty good. Ron

He could use my 950 HP, but I understand the secondary venturies on the 850 are a little bigger than the 950.

I think the next step up in appreciable gains from the 850 would be the 1050.

I'm always all for going faster..... but Let's not forget that Ron is running an 8-3/4" under that substantial slab of B-Body iron. I believe he has a Detroit locker in it, which is a big upgrade, but last I heard, the axles and housing are stock fare. If I were Ron, before I spent $$$ on going faster, I'd invest in a back brace and a set of good axles for his 8-3/4.... OR start building a Dana.

DAHIK.....
