If you set the crank(damper) at 34* on the compression stroke and drop in the dist pointed at #1 it'll start... if you set the crank at 0 and install the dist its ZERO timing and you end up turning it to 34 or there abouts if its a locked dist.... if it has advance set it at 20* then drop in the dist

I am going to relate a story and I doubt this is your problem but something to check... This one time late at night thrashing to get a 440 started I installed the wires on the cap in the correct firing order...clockwise. After many swapped parts and much head scratching my partner in the project ( the missus ) was reading the factory service manual and pointed out that a big block distributor turns counter clockwise. Just a thought that I can't seem to get out of my head for some reason.
