What car and class did the Factory Pro Stock guys run in? I remember Sox had an awesome 68 Cuda SS/A Butch Leal ran an equally awesome 65 SS/B Belvedere (And won a couple of races as I recall) Landy ran a 70 Hemi Challenger in SS/D But Ican not remember what the other Chrysler Pro Stock racers ran. What did Vanke Run? What did Grothear run or had he already retired at this point? What did Carlton run? What did Stepp run or did he just park his rig for a while? Let me know and any pics would be great. Thanks

Stepp stuck it out and ran as a independent. He wasn't a factory car anyway, to the official boycott didn't effect him. He was still successful in IHRA during that time.
Carlton ran his Dart Sport as a B/Altered, and also as an IHRA Pro Stock, and did pretty good. He would bomb the B/A record, and at Columbus a bunch of sportsman guys came to him moaning about him being there. His response was that if they didn't shut up, he'd put the record so low they'd never get it again.
Grotheer had a falling out with Chrysler when they thinned out the number of factory teams. He actually switched to a Ford Pinto for a while, but did not have nearly the success that he was used to.
I can't really remember Vanke staying in it. I think he just sort of semi retired.

Riffle in B/G 1975
I knew somebody was running B/G, couldn't remember who it was, I was running a B/G Austin Healey with an injected Hemi, we ran on the actual class records back then before the index system was initiated, I was running high 9.60's on a 9.56 record, obviously wasn't that competitive, someone in a retired Pro-stocker (probably Riffle) bombed it to a 9.13 in one weekend. Wound up finding a 3.48 crank and moving down to C/G, same thing happened, record got obliterated by over .60, was no way I could compete with a Prostock chassis, even if it had a junk motor. Thats when I sold the car and got into dragboats.....

Frito That picture of Bill Stepps Colt and His Demon and the Missle, do you know if it was that taken at Lakeland Florida? It looks like the picture of the round track where all of the Pro Stock Cars were pitted for the IHRA Winter Nationals

You are combining 2 classes here , Pro stock didn't come about till 1970 , the cars run in the year prior ran super stock .
but you knew that ...

No John, what I was asking about, was regarding the time around 1974 or 1975 that Chrysler actually boy cotted NHRA PRO STOCK and had all of their Factory Pro Stock drivers running in these other classes. While Chrysler was boycotting Pro Stock class at NHRA races.

I got confused because you put cars in your original post that never ran pro stock .

The Challenger went from Les Terrel owning the car, to Buddy Abbott here in Gainesville. I got my competition license in the car when it had a BB Chevy crate motor in it that would easily run low nines. The car was very light, weighing less than 2000 lbs. The frame rails were just folded up sheetmetal. It was very dark inside the car as the inside was covered with black velore. Two weeks after I drove it, it was being backed out of the water cooling area and the front wheel just fell off. The car then had some Strange struts installed. I still have the titanium front end pieces. The car was then sold to a street racer in Ocala, who totaled the car.

Indy 1974 when the pro stocks used to pit on the West side of the track in the "pit loop".

The chassis under that Challenger was originally Don Carlton's Gold Colt (A Carlton-Hodges piece). Car went to John Zorian, and then was re-bodied as the Challenger for Sox. Note the Mechanic: Clyde Hodges.
Wasn't the gold Colt the one that was stretched and in which he had his fatal accident? I've seen a mid-'70's magazine article and a more recent one that suggested it.

Not trying to start anything. Just hoping to know what's accurate and keeping it that way for as long as possible. Time often makes it difficult to know if things were reported accurately at the time or if facts surface later.
Where's Stewart???
