The slots are the safer way to do. Doesn't really weaken a stock setup. Still not necessary for street car.

On a car farting around town that has adaquate brakes. Not neccessary. On an overloaded capacity truck that cooks the brakes, maybe slots or casted in holes would help.
On the racetrack, it could help when done properly. But not all race cars use them.

One added benefit to the cast in holes is lighter weight. It doesn't remove a lot of weight but anything you do to remove rotating weight without compromising braking ability is a benefit.
