Fast nailed it, needs a wider spread at altitude to enhance the high RPM pumping efficiency.

Small ports (for a given displacement) can actually be advantageous at altitude in helping keep the VE up. Compared to atmospheric pressure it will take longer for the motor to 'run out of port' since less air is metered per RPM.

Your bigger ports are acting comparatively 'lazy' at lower piston speeds at high altitude....and once you gains mention the narrow cam (which would still work well at sea level if you have good CFM capacity) reduces the VE at the point where the ports can start really working.

A wider separation phased later would help the top end more than it would hurt the bottom/middle

If you went from an iron head to an aluminium head without any other change you effectively lost compression. The aluminum pulls more heat out of the chamber .

Not true. It ALLOWS more compression for a given octane, it does not REQUIRE more compression. Seen a couple tests with identical ports and chambers in iron and aluminum heads and no difference in HP but the timing could be advanced farther before pinging with the aluminum heads.

No Al, I won't be there, although I would like to--I was in AZ for almost 3 weeks, now catching up on things that didn't get done while I was away playing. I have time off my regular job, I am putting a roll bar/subframe/4-link under a 1979 Dodge Magnum "Pro Street" car for a friend. Next year I will be retired, hoping to be able to travel more.
