The QF Slayer series of carb ($300) uses an externally adjustable vacuum secondary dash-pot. It also has idle bleeds in the main body and the secondary metering plate is drilled for jets.

That said if you don't have the tune up parts you will be spending a little more to tune the carb to perfection.

My experience with a Holley 570 Street Avenger on my 318 is that it's WORLDS ahead of the 1850. I thought I'd jetted the 1850 down enough for the altitude (going from 66 to 59), but swapping on the 570 gave me an immediate 2 mpg and a much sharper-running engine.

I don't understand why, but there must have been SOME improvements in fuel metering in the last 30 years!

You can usually buy used 570s on the 'bay for around $100.

I too have an Avenger series carb (670 CFM) on the 318 in our W100 and it have been a great carburetor. They have come down a little in price too.
