Ok, I just took the coil wire off at the distributor and set it near ground. I turned the distributor back and forth, and get nothing.

you got a 1/4" spark out of the coil wire to ground when you grounded the neg primary coil wire. Will it spark(out of the same coil wire not a plug wire) when you move the dist back & forth. If so the reluctor/magnetic pickup is good.

No, so it must be the magnet and pick up. They are the only items not new in the whole set up. Thank you guys, I am calling it a day for now, have to sort mail in 6 hours......I will pick up parts at NAPA on the way home from work in the AM.

I recommend finding someone to at least help hands on or have it done.
At this point you are so confused and you don't seem to be able to comprehend what is being said.
Sorry but call a spade a spade.

you posted this as I was in the process of posting mine. With reluctor gap good 6-8 thou I believe then bad magnetic pickup. Reluctors don't go bad they are just a hunk of steel machined into a star unless it gets too close to the magnet & it gets chipped. If you have a VOM you can hookup the dist pickup leads to it & rotate it & with the VOM on it's lowest scale(I forget whether amps or volts) the scale will show some movement as a slight amt of fire is being generated & if it's "open" then nothing will show on the VOM.

Maybe Don, but if I had an old points type distributor handy, it would be running by now. I have never been good with electronic ignitions, and the obvious isn't helping me figure this out right now. Maybe the new box is bad, or maybe the connections at the box are not all contacting? It could be any number of things. I have a good friend to call on, when I finally give up. Thanks again, it will get figured out.

I guess that I was a little blunt but you need hands on help. All the printed word here is doing is confusing you and making it very hard for you to comprehend. Too many saying the same thing but coming in a different door making it hard.

I finally received my magnetic pick up, installed it, and now I do have spark at the plugs. My last question involves the trigger wheel........there are 2 marks, for advance I suspect........where should it be set to start with? I need a trigger wheel (source anyone?) but for now will put a new roll pin in. It turns on the shaft.......that can't be good!

Just ordered a trigger wheel at NAPA, any tips on indexing it with the 2 marks are appreciated.
