The hood pins (option code J45) were a separate option from the J54 scoops/black hood. Below is that section of the 71 dealer price list.

Pic from one of my magazines. This one is my favorate color and it looks like the stripes are done like that auto show car. A little longer. Dodge emblem is there also. I think the cowl area is black, it's just the sun reflecting off the grilles making it look painted. I'll dig out the issue and check to be sure. Eddie

That Road Test car appears to have either been modified or is possibly a pilot car that differed somewhat from a regular production version. Look at the cowl blackout.

That's what I was sayin above Scott, I'm gonna dig out the magazine road test to see if it's actually blacked out or not. If I remember right, it was just the sun's reflection off the blacked out grilles on the cowl. Eddie

It's also equipeed with the correct for 71 spoiler on the deck lid. Most Pilot 71 cars with the spoiler have the leftover 1970 style spoiler being that they were produced so early. A strange machine for sure, but definitely cool!

Then of course there are those alloy wheels.

The dodge emblem is really low on the hood, and it appears to be missing the 340 decal on the side.

I think they look great!! I'll bet it was one of those P.R. cars that got bounced around from magazine to magazine for tests and photos. Probably picked up those wheels along the way. I'm a 71 B Body guy so i never actually read the article....yet. I will in the next few days though and I'll post what I find. Or just the whole road test. Might say something about the installation of those rims.

Mr Norm standing with a demon picked up by Steve Green for a story published in may of 71. The Demon has the emblem and also the blackout without the border.

At First I thought the one on the cover might be this car, but it's not. This one looks to me like a pre-production unit. Cool photo though...in color no less.

That's an awesome pic Mike!! I noticed that one doesn't have the small border stripe around the backout areas. Oh great, I probably just opened a can of worms. lol

Na, there is a lot of variations, my demon didn't have the border and I've seen others that didn't. Also my emblem is the pin type where most seem to be stick on, although I have seen a few pin types that the owners say were original. Nothing is set in stone. There are a lot of other gray areas with 71 like engine color, type of bucket seats, seat belts, 71 had a lot of running changes.

You got that right... I find all kinds of variations on the 71 B Bodies also. I have a pretty big collection of vintage car magazines from 70 and 71. I'll check for more Demon related stuff. Eddie

There were certainly plant to plant changes and running changes, orange to blue engines, etc.

I looked at the pic a few times and just realized, it was mine from 2007! When I was selling the Demon poster. I recognized my wife's yardstick.LOL

Lol... yes, I remember asking you if you still had one of the photos I could purchase from you. I think you said you had already sold it. So I right clicked and saved the image you posted. It's the only one I've ever seen. Very cool pic. Eddie

Well, it turns out that my memory sucks!! lol The cover Demon is not even the same Demon that they are road testing. Still a great article though. And yes, if you copy and save this first cover shot of the EL5 Demon to your computer and then make it bigger, it does in fact have the 340 decal on the fender. you really need to look close. From that far away, that Butterscotch color washes it out. Eddie
