To make the panel work I would have to unfold the driver side seam and rebend it, 3/8 inch towards the driver 1/4.

it's not a seam, it's a break/bend, but I know what you mean and that would certainly be the best way to fix it. I could have that done in 1/2 hour. Not saying it's right that the stamping is obviously off or that the manufacturer shouldn't be more helpful.

I'd hang the deck lid back on it and see how it fits relative to the quarter edges and deck filler panel. Make sure those gaps are correct first.

Then I'd get the quarter edge next to the deck filler panel reworked to where it should be.
After all that, you can determine exactly what the filler panel needs.

From what I can see in the pictures, it appears it may be just a matter of shaving that protruding edge and possibly hammer & dollying to move the edge a bit towards the quarter.

Rick

That sounds like body work to me. I thought that these panels weld together like new without body work. The car that's being worked on has never been abused or rusted or in an accident right.

When these cars were built they did have wider tolerances with assembly than today's cars. Factory quarter panels, roofs and some other parts were trim by assembly line workers to fit due to make it all fit together. Because of the location, I don't think the deck filler panel is meant to be messaged or modified.

Rick is right. I will concentrate on fixing the quarter panel distortion first and then see how it all measures up with the trunk and vynal top trim installed. The Charger is all about lines, and the line along the trunk edge up to the rear glass may look wrong if I cut the gutter flange and pulled the 1/4 panel edge over that much or some how extended the 1/4 to meet the deck filler edge all the way 3/8th inch.

The trunk gutter fits very well all the way around and exactly occupies the same spot as my original. If I break the roof welds, support bracket welds, and quarter welds as AMD suggests to allow enough movement, then yes, cutting the flange would allow the 1/4 to be pulled over to close the gap, but then the body line and the trunk gap would have issues. Waiting for a new stamping run feels like the best move.

If I can't get a better panel, then what do you guys think, fill the gap with solder or extend the fold?

Thanks,
Carl

I spoke to AMD today and they did own up to a possible problem with the panels. I have a choice of sending the panel back for AMD credit and wait for the next run of stampings in a few months, or find another vendor with a good one in inventory, which would be the best route I think.

Depends on how long you can wait. I did a 68 charger that if I remember had a little bit of needed massaging to be done there but I took it that these parts are far better than what I had ever had the joy of working with and a little hammer dolly work was not out of the relm of feeling the product was junk or not worth anything. After the service I have recieved with dealing with Alan at amd I wont deal with anyone else on parts. I got a set of qrts for a 68 chevelle that just went on a few weeks ago. Alan said they were not amd's tooling and said he has had no issues with them. were they perfect no but worked just fine. To many people these days try to fit these parts and then say they are junk when they may not of had the joy of dealing with the parts from even 10 years ago. Like I said before I rambled on if you can wait I would. I have seen other suppliers deck pans out there and lets just say what you seen with what you got now is nothing to what you will end up with other suppliers. who did you deal with btw?

I've used Auto Body specialties dutchmen panels and they seem to fit beautiful. I've only done Road Runners and GTX but i'm sure there dutchmen for the Charger would fit just as well. Personaly i wouldn't be happy having to beat up a brand new part to make it fit. Not a body panel. I'd send it back and get one from another vendor.

I got mine from AMD last week, I checked it today and it fits. I also got one from Charger specialties, its made different but it fits good also. The AMD one has more features than the Charger Specialties but the Charger Specialties is thicker. Tim

After mocking everything, trunk lid, vynal top chrome, ect, I realized that I could still use this panel. My repair on the 1/4 mating surface can make up the difference enough and the panels will stretch a bit too.

If you ever have need AMD customer service, call Alan, he is a stand up guy.

Thanks all!

Yea, I can see that the window trim won't fit too well like that. Will the Dutchman panel go any further towards the rear? Mock up the trunk lid to see what the gap will be like. The gap on mine was bad to begin with so I may weld a welding rod to the front of the trunk lid to make up for the space.

If your 1/4 are not tacked on yet then you can still play with adjusting everything.
