what is the advantage of a return style reg. and when would it be necesary?

Fuel will be cooler in a hot engine compartment.
Fuel pump will run cooler, quieter, and last longer.

I think it would be more needed if you plan on doing a lot more street driving than drag racing.

A return or bypass regulator has a lot of advantages over a dead-head regulator but is only absolutely necessary if using a pump that does not have a built-in pressure limiting device (such as most pumps designed for fuel injection).
