I am going to run over to HF tonight and see what they have. I think a second tool for this would be nice leaving the jack handy if needed during the process.
It is the alignment while it mid-air that is the problem, I agree.
The longer stud idea is a good one, not sure what kind of space I am going to have with an A-body tunnel. When I mocked in the car I installed the tranny/bell/block as one. Not sure I am going to do that this time with a fresh paint job in the engine compartment.

Without a doubt, the challenge is getting the splines to line up and mesh home just right so you can stab the gearbox all the way in. I've found that rotating it back and forth and rocking the back of the gearbox in a circular motion makes it the easiest to line it up and slide it home, however, I think the long threaded rod is a great idea! get the weight of the gearbox off your hands/jack, and give you the freedom to wiggle it around while getting the splines to line up

Seems every time I use a transmission jack, it's just a cumbersome affair, 727 or 883 I usually end up just muscling them in, whether the car is on ramps or a lift,....I'd much rather lift TKO 5spds though, they're only 115 lbs....never did weigh a 727 or 883 For the OP, if you don't muscle "heavy equipment" on a daily basis, you might be better off with a jack, just to be safe.....

I bought one of these cheapies from Harbor Freight. I've used it for 833's five or six times. Much easier than muscle especially if your old, like me.
That is what I have, work smarter..not harder!

I picked up the HF jack. Looks like it will work great. I'm going to make some studs too.
Cut a slot in the end of the studs for a screw driver in addition to the flats,it's pretty close up top.

Use a couple of helpers or a transmission jack. I cut the end of my finger practically clean off. I got the trans down out of the car no problem (back when I is in much better shape). But then I had to set it down. It slipped and landed on the end of my finger. A bunch of gauze and a tube of neosporen, and it healed. But did it hurt for a while.

I put threaded studs in the bellhousing studs to mount the transmission in all cars I work on. Its not for the increased clamping force, but instead for the ability to line up the trans to slide into place. It really helps!
Bingo! Long screws with the heads cut off and ground to a bull-nose (2 diagonally opposite) make a MT install child's play!

Thanks for the tips guys. I didn't expect this thread to hang around this long... I think this will work out great. Already nice to just move it around the garage.

I also used to just lift them in.Now Im too old for that.Last time I did the 0ne in my 65 I had my 3 sons help.Sure is nice to have 3 grown sons.Especially when they can do mechanical work.I knew I raised them for a reason.LOL. I also made some long studs to help guide the tranny in.Rocky

Sure is, I have a 100# Jeep bumper strapped to mine so I can roll it around.

And after you get the jack from Harbor freight you can get one of their $9.99 furniture dollies, add a a 2 x 4 and a 4 x 4 and use it to install the k-frame, engine and trans from the bottom. I have done my challenger and my brother's 67 dart this way and it worked really slick...

The way the factory intended.
I have thought about doing it this way, what is your process? You have most of the suspension removed? I thought I would have issues getting the body back down at the correct height to get the K frame bolts started.
What did you use as a lift point on the body?
