I understand there is a very short list of North American gas tank manufacturers (like one?).

Note that YOUR "free shipping" will only cost $10.

The last A body tank I bought (about 4 years ago) was a Spectra tank. I was satisfied with the look, fit, and performance.

And to answer another related question, I used roofing tar paper for a replacement pad.

thanks... looking at the Spectra tanks, there's one for an "early 71" and a different model for a "late 71" ... this is probably a stupid question... but can I find out the date of manufacture from my fender tag? That's the only part of the car I have in my garage (I didn't send it with the car to the paint shop)

I just bought and installed this one:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/170574739900?ssPageName=STRK:MEWNX:IT&_trksid=p3984.m1439.l2649

Went in smooth and fit like the original.

Does it have anything to do with the ecs (ems can't remember) tubes? (Emisions control system?)

I know my demon had them on the upper left that went into a canister in the trunk under the filler tube.

The SPD (scheduled production date) should be on your fender tag in MDD format (A/B/C for Oct/Nov/Dec, respectively).

Of course, when it was scheduled and when it was actually built can be different. If different, the actual build date is typically later.

I'm chatting with someone at Autoparts Warehouse support.. they said the early 71's had electronic engine control, and the late 71's didn't. I don't even know what the heck that is.

Looks at the pics for the tanks near the bottom.

I'm pretty sure thats the difference, I had to deal with the same thing when I needed a tank.

The ECS tank is the one with the extra four tubes by the filler neck that connect to rubber hoses then go up into a long silver canister in the trunk (at least they did in my 71 demon)

I wonder if he's guessing and it means something like evaporative emissions control?

Heres a picture of the offending cylinder in a demon.

That other one by the wheel well.

I'M working on a 1970 dart original California car,it has the 4 tubes coming out of the gas tank along with a emissions tube in the trunk on the left side behind the wheel well.I think 3 of the rubber lines goes into tube and one runs to the engine bay.

Sound like he has no idea at all what he is talking about. If it were electric control it would be on the later not the earlier. He has mistaken the e in there for electric, instead of emissions.

as said above the later 71`s will have all the hoses coming out w/the tube in the trunk and the early 71`s will not. my 71 had all the hoses but i switched it over to the early style when i put the BB in.

Comes WITH a sending unit too?
I just checked the link. It reads that it comes with the sending unit RETAINER ring, NOT the sending unit itself. Those usually cost from $50 and up.
Keep the original retaining ring from your old gas tank. The new ones are often flimsy and do not seal the sending unit like the originals.

I found out this the hard way with gas leaking all over the place. Now I get to crawl under the car and replace the flimsy locking ring with a better one I found and ordered from this place:

Looking at the ebay description, it comes with the sending unit lock and retaining ring, NOT the sending unit. Still a good deal, and a very timely post as I'm ordering a new tank for my late-year '71 Dart later this week!

OK.. so I called the guy who's working on the car, he said that the tank in the car has the 4 vent hoses on it.. HOWEVER.. since I've done an engine swap (to a 360) on the car, and am not terribly worried about emissions.. if I'm replacing the tank, I'm guessing it's okay for me to swap to the style without the 4 vent lines...?

Don't do that Those lines are to let trapped air escape out of the corners of the tank so it will fill all the way up and keep air pockets from forming in those corners Look inside your old tank and see It's not about emissions, it about correcting a design fault The A body tanks are smaller(holds less fuel) than the other body styles do I bought a new Spectra tank for my 1971 Duster, it only holds 14 gallons total filled up into the neck about 3 inches down from the top The Spectra tanks are made in Canada, very good quality BTW, if your going to replace the stock pickup and sender get one with a 3/8 I.D. or bigger pickup now, not later
