My heater does not work and I changed the thermostat(195) last Saturday and it made no difference. I have been told that my heater core needs replacing. How hard is it to change?

My 96 2500 needs one and the cheapest price I got was $600-700 and most shops here will not even do it...The front seat should come out then the whole dash needs to come out then the heater box can be removed...With a bad back it's way too much for me to do...

I may guess that most shops won't touch it because of liability. The brittle plastic dash tops and bezels will fall apart if you look at them wrong. They don't want to buy you a new dash.

Try back flushing the core before you tear into it to see if you can knock any sludge loose.

Mine leaks so back flushing may make me disconnect it all together...My dash is fine 277K now and not a single crack.....

It is not that hard. The dash is designed to pivot out. You loosen a bolt in each kick panel and the dash will "roll" forward towards you.

Remove the ABS, lower the steering column first of course. 5 bolts and a pesky screw on top fo the heater box and it is out.

I have a quad cab and I tied the das off to the latch for the quad cab door. I routed the strap through the grab handle for ease of direction of strap.

My '01 didn't have a single crack until last summer. By summer's end it had one large crack and another small. I covered it with carpet at that point, not sure what I have now.

absolutely. BUT you have already discharged your ac and you have the box out. What is another $60 for the evap? The heater core is around $50, so for $110 or so, all is replaced.

Plus you can clean the box, check the foams, etc. I made sure I reconfigured the box correctly after I took it apart by using a hand held vacuum pump

Check the hose on the heater first. Both should be hot when you run the motor. If not it could be plugged.Ive cleaned a bunch by as said flushing them.A lot easier than changing the core.Rocky
