And yet another "heads-up" series slowly starts to swirl down the toilet.

I see nothing has changed in the last eight years since I cared about this type of racing.

I have a dusty set of aluminum HEMI heads if anyone is interested. Hahahahaha

I see a head laying on a table , I only know Tom in that picture and as said that was 6 or 7 years ago, the car is how many tenths faster NOW ???

using Stanton as the control group, the car has picked up .06 since the head came off in 2006.

Mind showing your math Donny? I could be wrong but I kinda recall the big number back the was 11.55 and now this weekend in the heat (96 degrees) it went a 11.25. Here in Pennsylvania that works out to be a solid three tenths. Let alone the fact Terry is telling Rick "there is plenty more" for the Road Runner.

How do you get plenty more from your stock parts?

Correct me if I am wrong but aren't pure stock cars supposed to have stock heads meaning no porting at all ? I grew up around stock muscle cars and dont get me wrong as I love the Pure Stock and FAST cars as they are what I love. But most like me really are not that stupid to think these cars are totally stock. I have a article where Hot Rod tested a 69 L88 Vette and it only had 3.36 gearing but ran 13.50's at almost 111. Thats 111 not 125. Most if not all muscle cars in stock condition never even got in the 12's. I know these have a slighty bigger exh and electronic ign but no way it makes that much difference. And the other point I cant understand is how they keep getting so much faster each year if they are supposed to stay all stock ? I know Bob K's Hemi Cuda has gome from a high 12 to an 11.70 car over the last 8 or so years. I am only using his as an example because I can remember his ets since I like his cars so much. But if you stay stock and cant go to better parts how do these cars go from the times of mid 12's ten years ago to 11.20's now. The tune sure dont make up that kind of power.

So as I said I do love this hobby and really enjoy the Pure stock cars but no way do I think they are even close to stock. I do understand that many have put alot of hard work to get where they are and I would do the same if I ran in that class but I know they have many tricks and are not even close to stock. No way could they go that fast. Some may be close to stock but they run 13's or high 12's.

Please dont take this as slamming the Pure Stock cars as I am just stating my opinion and do not want to upset anyone as it is just my opinion as I would go watch Pure Stock cars race before I would go to and NHRA race. Ron

I don't have a problem with the L88. I almost bought a 69 Camaro that had an L88 in it back in the early 80's

bet you wish you had bought it

Yes I wish I did , I heard the kid that did buy it wrapped it around a pole a few months after he bought it. White with black top 69 SS 350 car, it wasn't incredibly fast, one time I saw it at the track in was running low 13's, auto trans with 3.42 gear and from a 20mph roll the tires would just go up in smoke ... I was easily impressed when I was 19

I have a good nose for it and I can tell you for 100% SURE that some(or at least one) of the cars are running oxygenated race fuel-at least they were when I last attended a race. With the proper tune up, I have made LOTS of power with that fuel on the dyno. My feeling is that they should at least have a spec fuel that is dispensed at the event and the tank cap sealed by a tech official. This would be a very easy rule to implement( I would think) and might eliminate some of the possible issues there...

Just a thought

Sure

.04 - .08, carry over the 10 so you have .14 - 08 and that is .06

.5 - the carried .1 minus .4 is 0

11 - 11 is zero

so, from the time Julie ran 11.54 at Stanton in 2006 until last year when she ran 11.48 at Stanton, the car picked up .06

Mike, you are right about the fuel, also all the deviations from stock with tire sizes, exhaust, compression, add to that the cams are getting better, though 'stock', and the machine work and home work being done is propelling these cars faster. I just don't think it will ever be big enough to have full tech and spec fuel, and all the stuff that will cap the speeds.

it has become the wild west with loose rules, no doubt.

Engine blueprinting and tire technology. Guarantee you that the heads are stock, as in unported and with the original valve sizes. They can be milled to the minimum (114.8 for a 69 L88) cc's to give maximum compression, and pistons with the maximum overbore allowed. Piston domes are at the maximum and block deck heights are cut to the minimum, all to get the most horsepower while staying within the "rules". Stock camshafts can be installed in an advanced or retarded position, whichever works best for the particular engine. This kind of rebuild isn't the kind you find going on at your average machine shop, but they are being done and can still meet the stock "rules". Did you notice the close-ups of the well worn tires on the orange Vette and the black Mopar over on the picture thread? A simple change of tires from a new set to the well worn set gained over a half of a second in e.t. Also, a set of tires as they were made in 1969 are nearly as hard as wood, and the new reproduction tires made today are even softer and stickier than slicks were back when these cars were new. All that, combined with drivers that have been driving the same car for 10 or even 20 years, gives unbelievable e.t.'s compared to old road tests where the drivers had the car for maybe three or four days, and took it to an untreated track for their testing.

The above can be applied to any make or model of car, with any engine you choose. I would like to think that if you do so, you will be faster than any road test done back in the day.

July 19th should be "Drive Like Rockford Day". R.I.P. Jimmie.

I find it commical that the Elephant in the room that is being ignored is the fact that the Vette (or any other winner, top qualifier, or record setter) should have been techd and it wasn't.

End of conversation.

Ok so it went 11.48 last year , this year it went 11.25 in the HEAT , my fuzzy math says it picked up .23 and if you add since the last time it was teched ... sort of ... that is .29 ...

I have heard of selective hearing but never selective math, new one on me Donny. Forgot about the 96 degrees and over 3000 feet of air and the 11.25 pass Huh?

All things being equal, that .25 is dipping into the 10s at Cecil or MIR in mineshaft, cool fall air...

using Stanton as the control group

what part of that is unclear ???

every track is different... which is why people make the pilgramage to MIR

other cars have picked up over a half second at Stanton over the same time period........

I thought Julies car ran 11.29 last year at martin, so .03 over last year and the car needs to be teched yet again.

I think the real elephant in the room is the one that did not knock the L88 off the top spot, yet.

it was one of the heavy tech cars just 2 years ago

Donny, your comments make you look foolish.

Any times the Vette ran (at ANY event) without being teched afterwards to verify it's lagallity are invalid it may as well not even been there. Not to mention that he was asked to have it teched and he refused? Common, get a clue!

You want to know what is funny and ironic? The car did have aluminum heads on when it WAS legal to do so. When I ported a set of iron heads and put them on the car and kept it a secret, THAT is when the car started getting fast. Hahahaha.

The aluminum heads moved around so much when they heated up, I could never keep the valves lashed. Plus I changed the intake port on the iron heads a bit.

My old man actually just sold that car a few months ago. It lives in Iowa now and is a street car.
