where did you come up with the notion that the L88 has not been teched since 2006 ?????

it was one of the heavy tech cars just 2 years ago

Below is a direct quote from Terry regarding his Corvette. According to him the car has been teched at every event since 2006.

Quote:

Okay Jeff and Tom I'll answer your questions Julie's car has been tech more than any other car in the pure stock racing series if you look at ET's from 2006 at Stanton Julie ran a 11.54 in 2006 right after that I tore the motor part handed over the camshaft so fast forward all the way up to 2011 last fall She went 11.48 that's only 6 100's quicker since the time that I pulled the motor apart and handed over to camshaft. So I thought It might be interesting to look at all the other top cars from 2006 and to my surprise they were all quite a bit quicker in 2011 one half a second quicker one 3/10 of a second quicker and one just over 2/10 of a second quicker and get this Julie's 6/100 of a second quicker between 2006 and 2011 At Stanton so all the top cars at Stanton from 2006 to 2011 it's had the lowest gain in ET now as far Martin last year after the 11.29 pass I had Dave Dudek come over and check her car at my asking he checked Spring pressure went for a ride he saw the transmission shifted on its own I jacked it up so you can climb underneath it I took off the fuel line so he could see that when I cranked it over the fuel would pulse to show that there is no electric fuel pump he looked in the fuel tank to make sure that there was no fuel-cell and in 2012 the car goes 4/100s quicker Make no mistake her car has been in every single tech session since I built that car there hasn't been one tech session that her car hasn't been in and at the next race in Lebanon Valley it can have the same tech at those other cars just had at Martin and at Stanton all five of the L88 Corvettes In my pits can have the same tech.

Doesn't every car get teched at every race? Mine has. I think there is a difference between Heavy Tech and Tech Inspection.

Correct me if I am wrong but aren't pure stock cars supposed to have stock heads meaning no porting at all ? ......if you stay stock and cant go to better parts how do these cars go from the times of mid 12's ten years ago to 11.20's now. The tune sure dont make up that kind of power...... Ron

Engine blueprinting and tire technology. Guarantee you that the heads are stock, as in unported and with the original valve sizes. They can be milled to the minimum (114.8 for a 69 L88) cc's to give maximum compression, and pistons with the maximum overbore allowed. Piston domes are at the maximum and block deck heights are cut to the minimum, all to get the most horsepower while staying within the "rules". Stock camshafts can be installed in an advanced or retarded position, whichever works best for the particular engine. This kind of rebuild isn't the kind you find going on at your average machine shop, but they are being done and can still meet the stock "rules". Did you notice the close-ups of the well worn tires on the orange Vette and the black Mopar over on the picture thread? A simple change of tires from a new set to the well worn set gained over a half of a second in e.t. Also, a set of tires as they were made in 1969 are nearly as hard as wood, and the new reproduction tires made today are even softer and stickier than slicks were back when these cars were new. All that, combined with drivers that have been driving the same car for 10 or even 20 years, gives unbelievable e.t.'s compared to old road tests where the drivers had the car for maybe three or four days, and took it to an untreated track for their testing.

The above can be applied to any make or model of car, with any engine you choose. I would like to think that if you do so, you will be faster than any road test done back in the day.

I agree and understand what you mean. I just dont believe they would go as fast as they are. But as I stated I would do the same as the serious racers have to. Thats the thrill of competition as no one will sit still and watch the competiters go faster and not put their hard earned work to making their cars faster. So I agree that as racers they will keep working to find any performance edge as thats what its all about. I guess the Pure Stock is just like any racing class to the extent that everyone will push the envelope to the most they can to be faster and that part is what us racers do. I just feel some are pushing the envelope a fair amount beyond the point of stock. I do hope the class never goes away no matter what as I really like the stock looking muscle cars that run as hard as we want them too. Ron

that is the rub, Ron.

PS never should have moved off advertized compression and advertized exhaust.

MUST BE STOCK should not be this difficult.

heck, the post above about swapping the Dana out for a lighter axle does not even raise and eyebrow.......

You want to know what is funny and ironic? The car did have aluminum heads on when it WAS legal to do so. When I ported a set of iron heads and put them on the car and kept it a secret, THAT is when the car started getting fast. Hahahaha.

The aluminum heads moved around so much when they heated up, I could never keep the valves lashed. Plus I changed the intake port on the iron heads a bit.

So maybe a Corvette with iron heads instead of aluminum would be even faster ??

That could really be scary....

Why would it? Rick is running a heavier rear end than he should. 60 lbs of unsprung weight. Hemis with Automatics came with a 8 3/4 the Dana was a option, we all know that.

Ok so it went 11.48 last year , this year it went 11.25 in the HEAT , my fuzzy math says it picked up .23 and if you add since the last time it was teched ... sort of ... that is .29 ...

I haven't been to Stanton since 06 and I only know of him pulling the cam , was there an official tech down to the car as they do for the certification process? I don't know what has been checked and how well since then, By reading your post it made it sound like the last tech was '06 , my mistake

In my opinion all the heavy hitters should submit to a full cert EVERY YEAR unless they can prove without a doubt nothing more than an oil change has been done , break a seal , recert.

It would be interesting to see what the L88 runs with an as delivered from the factory engine and exhaust using the tire technology of today, just blueprint how it was and not blueprint it to the NHRA spec .

I know my Dart is not impressive in as delivered condition, well close, the worn timing chain had the can retarded a bunch.

Amazing thread guys. The 68 Hemi RR will be the top dawg soon enough, as soon as he loses the heavy dana 60 and puts in a lighter 8 3/4.

I would be very surprised if he saw any ET difference from that swap. I have done the Dana to 8 3/4 swap on 2 different very consistent cars, and neither one picked up anything at all. One of them was a Dana with a factory sure grip unit, to an 8 3/4 with a spool, same gear ratio in both. No ET change at all. If I remember right the 8 3/4 was almost 80 pounds lighter too.

not sure sure who you are including in we.... but I am not in it

but even if it were not an option, under current PS rules, he could make the swap.

Ricks Road Runner automatically gets the 8 3/4 rear if it is a hemi/torqueflite car. They did not offer a Super track pack option until 1969 where you could get a dana with a automatic. All hemi torqueflites came with 8 3/4 from 1968 and earlier. Dana with hemi 4 speed. That extra weight may give another .05- .10 in the quarter mile

Never saw any gain from this. In fact, Eds 6 pk FAST RR was actually slower with the 8-3/4. And managed to twist the stock 8-3/4 axles with the bias tires...

Our roar runner was quicker with a Dana. Also shattered the Mosier axle shafts in the 8 3/4 with the bias plys.

a couple of thoughts come to mind....

-supposedly the valve cover(s) was already off the Vette.
at this point.......why the big objection for tech?
they checked like CR and valve springs. no real disassembly required....... just do it and avoid the controversy.

-seems like an addition to the rules regarding qualifying and tech should be implemented.
4 or 5 quickest get teched.
that way you know going into the event......if you're a big player in the class, you're going to be looked at harder.

another thing.....
ive been in the tech barn at an NHRA event, helping my friend go through tech after setting a record in "Stock".
when you make the record run, after you get the time slip, you take the car directly to the tear down area.
you dont get to go back to your trailer first, etc.....you go directly to tear down.
then go get the tools and bring them to the car. then take apart whatever they tell you to.
and......you dont get any $$$ for setting a record in NHRA stock either.......yet, i didnt hear anyone whining about being torn down.

if you dont want to be torn down.......then dont go for the record.

Now that there is a couple of purpose built hemis running amuck I am pretty sure the Mopar guys will be holding their head a little higher. Can't wait to see the RR and Dave's Bee running down the track side by side.

I was shocked to see that the hemi road runner did not make it to the Nats. That would have been cool. Maybe he will make it to MMM in September.
