Is this right? Are the Hemi boys really going that badly in Pure Stock?

What gives?

I was wondering the same thing?

Just went back and looked at the results and the Hemi's where right there.

11.71 for a pure stocker that has to weigh 3800+. I sure would not be ashamed of that.

The guy must be speaking in reference to bonafide AA/HA Super Stock '68 Mopars? The videos in the link are for street cars not 'way too much time and money' rocket cars??

Possibly he may be comparing the slowest of the Hemi cars to the L88 cars. The thing about the L88 cars are if you see one at the Pure Stock drags it's a 90%+ chance that it is a prepared car built especially to compete in the pure stock drags and thus the times. Many of the Hemi cars are driving restorations with very little drag race prep.

The 67 Rt is more along the line of a prepped Hemi car although I am thinking that is a new build and possibly has more in it.

As far as the Pontiac's go there is one really fast Ram Air II Firebird. To say it is well prepped would probably be an understatement.

I was waiting to reply because I wasn't shure what the original poster meant.
Don't take all those videos as gospel either. One of the in car videos was done when a hack driver was behind the wheel and missed a shift.

Jim is the original owner of the 67 R/T Hemi. That Hemi is very stout, traction is a huge issue.
One of the in car videos had a different driver.

Sorry for the delay in replying - I'll clarify....

If you follow the link and scroll down to the race videos, virtually EVERY Mopar vs Cheb race has the Mopar getting whupped.

Is the GM aftermarket stuff that much better? OR are the Mopars just not being prepped like they should be?

Either way...if you read the comments on some of the vids...the GM boys are happily re-writing history....

There is only so much one can do and stay within the rules. The old rules were build the engine to NHRA spec which seems to favor the brand X cars more .

Whats the deal with the L-88's belching plumes of blue smoke after they go through traps? Can't say I've noticed any other cars doing it.

Aren't the L-88 engines aluminum? it's more than just making power, it's also weight transfer, and getting it to the ground. A corvette (light to begin w/) w/ an all aluminum motor and a car that has a better weight transfer+better suspenion is going to = a faster et. That car isn't or should it be in the same class as a "muscle car" It's a sports car. Just a thought. How would that engine run a a big heavy Impalla?

Is this a serious question? They have smallblock heads that will outflow a B1 with ease.

The L88's have aluminum heads and intake. Weight distribution is good and it has good heads, intake, exhaust manifolds and a big holley.

L88 has an Iron block , Only the ZL-1 had an aluminum engine block.

Yes it is - I don't pretend to know one thing about Chebs other than the ZL1 was supposed to be the bees knees as far as GM was concerned.

So the issue seems to be more about chassis/ platform than the actual engine ?

I have a friend that is an active pure stock racer (He runs Mercurys). We've had the discussion before with the L88 Vettes being legal. I contend they're a ringer due to weight,wheelbase,.540/.560 solid cam,12.5-1,aluminum heads. Hemi Darts and Cudas aren't legal. It doesn't really matter as there are so many different combos. With a wide spread in weight between various body styles nothing will ever be apples to apples. Tech hum,how many 12 sec 350 Pontiacs have you ever seen?

Coil rears - they gain weight transfer by squatting.

- Mopars rely on lightweight front ends and separation to plant the tyres....Its a tougher gig.
