With all the power at hand you wouldnt need the steeper
low gear... that helps with heavier cars to get the
weight rolling... I have a glide that I was going to
put behind my B-1 M/C 514ci Daytona... (but I sold
the engine).. I set that up with the 1.76 low because
the car would be light(same weight as what your friend
is using

3000 lb car with PG, 1.76 gear and 5400 rpm stall. You really don't want or need the 1.80 in a 2400 lb car.

why not??
My T/S car went 1.09 60' on motor with 1.80 straight cuts. 1.06 on spray. That is all I've ever use. Dart goes 1.16x with same trans at #2700.
Honestly I don't think the numerical difference in ratio is that big a deal. I just prefer a straight cut gear, especially in a doorcar.

the straight cut must be stronger, takes a lot of power to need to back down low gear.
