Ain't happening. $100 bucks to the Ronnie Sox Foundation says so.

I'll start by saying I saw a duster run very high 12's and the guy told me it was a stock low compresion (8:1) long block with a 509 MP cam and 4.10 gears. I think it had open headers.

Thanks

What color might this duster be? Yellow by chance?

Not yours Bad Fish,

I was asking Rapid340 and where did he see this Duster run.

I was actually wondering if it was mine or member 360/904's. Our's are a bit quicker than high 12.'s though.

Rick...

I think he means stock "smog" bottom end, not 100% stock.

Dont know if it was you, it was 10-12 years ago. Back before strokers and aftermarket heads where growing on trees.

It occoured to me that the first MP 300HP crate motor was a stock smog motor with a 280 474 cam and a dual plane intake. They had the swirl heads and I think those could touch 12's in a 3000 lb car.

A couple of magazines did tests with one of the 360/360hp Commando crate engines in a 3,400lb Duster. I believe Hot Rod had a shootout between that and Chevy & Ford crate engines. I think the Mopar ran low 12's in the shootout and Dick Landy got it into the high 11's afterwards with some more tuning. But that, like other crate engines, was not OEM available thus not a "smogger".

The 300hp version can't be considered a "smogger" for the same reasons. The only difference between the two was the intake manifold, .010" of cam lift and intake valve size.

I have the 300hp version, but blueprinted to IHRA specs with a single plane intake, I've been 11.31 so far. My engine builder has been high 10's in a lighter car.

But "stock smogger 360" can be defined a lot of ways. OEM looses a lot of compression because pistons were way down in the hole and car versions were dished. With or without smog equipment installed? Later years got worse.

Okay, post it.I'll let the gang on this board decide if it's "stock" or not.

To me, Smogger means stock pistons, stock crank and stock rods. Heads may be milled some as a cheap way to gain SOME compression back but over 9:1 and it ain't a smogger!

Myron,

I would be surprised if the old 300 crate motor was anything other than a stock low compression 360 long block with better valve springs and cam. I looked at some old MP catalogs and they specify the crate 360 as having 9:1 compression, the crate 300 they are strangely silent on compression. I bet all the 300 crates had production 8:1 cast pistons.

I mean stone freaking stock, re-ringed and rebearing at most. I'm not thumbing my nose at Fish or anything.I'm sure he's got plenty of hard work, deep thinking, and attention to detail in his bullet. I just don't want the poor guy who started this thing to think he can go like stink without a lot of hard work and experience. There's a million miles between a stock motor and a Stock Eliminator motor.

I went 13.4@ 102 with a stock 79 360 with MP 474 cam performer intake 625 AFB headers and 3.23 gears in a 3250# dart

I needed 4.10 gears to get there with the heavy RR.

Jeff,

From some stories I heard, some of the original pre-production crate engines may have been built with OEM pistons, flattops or dished. But once production began both versions had higher compression flattops with notches.

I see what you're saying in the '93 and '94 catalogs. But the .474" cam would seem a little stout for an 8.0-1 compression. I have some more articles around but don't have time to do more digging. However, the IHRA specs for my 300hp version, which came from Mopar before they accepted the combo, calls for flattops with notches.

I just found that the 1998 catalog, page 25, lists KB flattops as "Service Pistons for the MP 360 Commando Crate Motors, 9.0:1." It doesn't differentiate between the 300hp or 360hp versions. Perhaps they were early KB 107's. The notches are not like the 2 "eyebrow" current versions, but they would likely provide about 9.0:1 if the heads and/or block were not milled a lot, just cleaned up.

P5249478 - 4.020"
P5249470 - 4.030"

I've been told that both versions of the original Magnum crates had OEM shortblocks.
