what do you guys think when a newbie is interested in going fast, and wants to know how much money he needs to spend to run 11s or 10s, or 9s? Or he wants to know if he screwed up while shopping and over-spent when building something? is it offensive to ask how much a car cost to build?

I tell the truth- I have around $13k in my demon so far. Bought it for 4, drove it for a couple years every day, and rebuilt it all myself-(well Jamie passon did my trans) 6k into a 408 drivetrain, some $ on body panels, some $ on legendary seat covers, carpet, little stuff and more little stuff. Should run low 12s if I can ever get it down the track I'm just happy to drive it to work and know I touched every part of it. And I LOVE beating up on the sideways hat import fart can set. I also like to say "wanna hear it?" I know lots of guys have 13k just in their cyl heads and many have run 10s with less $ but I'm still proud of my ratty a-body Radar

The FIRST thing I do is look around and make sure the Wife is not within earshot before divulging any info on cost!!! Other than that I'm typically honest, and explain that most of my stuff has been traded out, or bought used.
Usually racing or having a really nice Mopar is more about "How bad do you want to make it happen" and less about "How much did you spend".

My reply usually starts with "to the best of my knowledge we have spent" I thien begin to sob uncontrollably

what it cost me means very little.. if i had 20 grand in my pocket right now...id spend it all on my car.... i stopped counting how much ive spent..its probably way more than i can imagine anyway..
its a carrot thats dangled out there..as long as im motivated and want to go faster or have it run or look better....than im still in the game.
if someone want to genuinely know to understand for themselves .I help them if i can..
but how do you put a price on experience?

Thats the question that I'm glad my ex wifes lawyer didn't find the answer too. . When someone ask how much mine cost, I ask "which time? When I first bought it, or when I bought it back? It doesn't really matter how much, it was worth every penny. Brian Dunnigan

I usually say "I'm not sure, I traded and swapped for most of it" which is true.
Some people have said it must be expensive to drag race. I tell them not really, we run the car conservatively and keep up the maintenance so all it really costs is entry fees. The problems start when you go quick enough to break stuff.
