I usually tell them what I've spent on it, then I tell them if they want to duplicate it then it would be about 2/3 what I've spent while figuring out which cam, intake, converter, gear, tire, etc. works best, but you'll have to pay me the other 1/3 for the knowledge.

My reply usually starts with

"to the best of my knowledge we have spent"

I thien begin to sob uncontrollably

This is funny.
I will tell the rough amount , but denial will not allow me to try and get an accurate number.
I do know this...........I have more tied up in my heads and intake that I do in the vehicle I drive to and from work.........by a factor of three.
Most people cannot comprehend the numbers unless they have some kind of recent experience in the car game.
A sideways related story took place at a knife show........a friend who is a nationally respected dealer had a Father and Daughter approach his table.
My friend had one of his Daughters at the show with him and she had some beanie babies on the table with the knives.
The customer's daughter saw a beanie that she had to have , and being a good Dad , he asked " how much ? "
He was told " 7.00 ".
Then he picked up a Bob Terzuola ACTF........a very nice folder that ranges between 600 to 1000 depending on materials.
Again he asked " How much ? " , and was told " eight "
He pulled out a ten and a five , then nearly soiled himself when he was informed that the knife was eight hundred.
A lot of people just have no idea.

If they are asking about a part I will give a real answer, unless they are a jackass. If they are asking about the whole car it will be "too much" or "not enough" or "why?" depending on how it's running and my mood. That question always ticks me off.

the last guy that asked about my 68 charger, unrestored virgin, I wanted $45,000.00. The look on his face was priceless!

and all Im wanting for my Blazer is 3k...

they always say that they will call in a few weeks..we all know what that means...

depending on who is doing the asking, I'll inform them on costs...not what I pay for them, but what they are sold for...
