So I spoke with mike from gear vendor he said the adapter for my 727 would be about 650. He even said if the unit were bad that swap am would be 800 for anew overdrive unit. That's still a nice savings compared to buying a brand new unit from them directly.

even spending $700 for the adapter on top of that $700 GV unit its a steal for $1400

When I called them about buying the adapter they told me around $700 PLUS my old one which I balked at. They did offer me a deal that I should jump at which was for me to send them my complete unit and they would exchange it for a complete re-man for $1200. The one I have is off a 700R4 and I have $250 in it.

To use the shorty adapter you will need to either have a short truck trans or change the output shaft to a short one. If and when I finally pull the trigger on the one I have, I will be going with the shorty. It should make for much a better driveline angle.

I've been looking at the GV for a while for the GTX but now waiting for the Hi-Tech 4-speed overdrive 727 just advertised in Jan 2012 MCG page 14. Should do everything I want. No cost or availabity yet.

The GV is a nice unit...As stated splitting the gears is tough when going from overdrive to the next gear up/down standard...And most times you won't want to split them like that anyhow...Obviously the OD is what you're after with one of these the rest is a bonus...Money well spent especially if you can snag a used one....

I went with a 518 trans, which if you run a SB it
bolts right up... it offers a greater OD ratio than
the GV ... the 518 is a .69 OD... and if you wanted
to stay with the stock 518 torque converter you can
have lock up also... I eliminated the lock up in favor
of a high stall converter so I had to change the front
pump and input shaft to fit a regular 727 converter..
my total price is maybe $650 for everything... I bought
the trans from the bone yard and rebuilt it and replaced
the pump for that $650... vs $2900+ for the GV

and if you run a bb, go with an ultrabell for an extra $350 or so. still LOTS cheaper than a gearvendor od. i'm gonna go this route on my humpback.

I have a gear vendors in my 500 duster have had it for about 5 years now and it runs 9's. I run 4.30's and use the gear vendors as a 4th gear. Have probably 300 to 400 runs at the strip on it and works flawlessly. It is still able to drive this on the freeway. check it out at http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ggjvw6t_6Sw

Hey Frank,

Did the Mean Machine have a console and did the console fit over the modified tranny tunnel?

Update: This tranny is made by Hi-Tech transmissions in Farminton Hill, Mich. Guys name is Tim Kohalisky, I talked with his son on the phone last week. He has a prototype but as yet is not in the test vehicle, took 6 years to design. Price goal is 2K. He is looking for machine shops to mass produce parts at present. Story is in Jan 2012 Mopars Collectors Guide, page 14, or call him 248-473-5800.

Yes...or at the least have the existing one shortened and a new end put on it to accept the GM u joint to fit the GM slip yoke.

No, it was a bench seat car. However, no trouble with seat adjustment or anything else in that matter.
