I have a Dana 60 from a 79 Ford truck with factory 4.10 gears and clutch type posi. I want to build a budget Dana to fit my 70 Cuda using the stock 4.10 gears and posi. Please recommend the best bang for the buck to make this work using my original 11x3 rear drums. Who has the best deal on Mopar housing ends and axles? Also, any other thoughts are welcome. Thanks.

Does it have provision for the pinion snubber? Do you need the pinion snubber? Do you have a welder ? Can you weld ? Do you have the jig to change the axle ends ? What is your budget ?

Problem is that the posi unit you have probably takes 18 or 23 spline axles or something like that. So you either need goofy custom axles or to convert/rebuild it to accept the standard 35 spline stuff.

Cass aka Dr Diff can tell you all of this, and help you weigh your options. Just give him a call he's super easy to talk to.

Cass(DocDiff) is your best source for info and parts.
Housing ends $75 or so
Setup kit. $120 or so
Axles c/ bearings $300 (35 spline)
MW jig. $500 or shops will shorten for $250 or so.

Watch that gear set also, some truck stuff has odd course spline pinions making yoke availability challenging. To bad yah didn't live closer you could use my jig.

Best of luck

Pull one of the stock axles and count the splines, they probally are either 30 or 35 splines, the 18 and 23 splines where pre 1970 Either way you can have new car type axles made for your rear end just like what came in the original cars Are you going to have it shorten to the stock width or narrower like a 1970 and earlier B body? That width might fit better Dana made those rear ends for all three car makers so they have parts to make any axle spline fit in the posi and open carriers I have swapped the spider and side gears from 23 spline to 30 and 35 splinnes to use the bigger axles in cars and trucks

FWIW...I have 2 Dana 60s out of mid 70s trucks (one ford, one dodge) and both have 23 spline axles.

That supric=ses me I have a Dana 60 out of a mid 1970 Dodge Ram Van, I'm going to pull one of those axles now and see what splines are in it I'm planning on using it(converting it) in a street car with one of the clutch type posi(one 23 and one 35 spline) that I already have

Dutchman wants 380 to hot tank, narrow, and install billet ends including shipping. Ford ran 30 or 35 spline in their larger trucks. I am installing the Dana 70 gears in the 60 housing. It only costs 150.00 more and gives a 30% increase in strength. If you want disc brakes, have dutchman install the billet big ford ends and then get a disc brake setup from teraflex, the kit is 189 for the backing plates and you can use explorer or grande cherokee rotors and calipers from a salvage yard. I will have around 1200 in my hybrid axle when done. 3.55 gears and 35 spline power lock. Tim

Dana 60 spool $125
35 spline axles with bearings and 3" studs $300 pair most lengths
gears 3.54, 3.73, 4.10 or 4.56 $195 pair
install kit $125
add ring gear bolts $15 set
axle flanges for the end $70 pair, plain
$145 pair deluxe kit with inner seals, studs and nuts
and spring perches $15 pair
1350 forged steel U-bolt yoke $70
Comes to $1060

The 60 is heavier then hell. Right now it has huge drums and full floating axles. Took everything my brother and I had to carry it across the guys drive way I bought it from and into the back of the truck.

Once you get rid of all the factory truck brake setup and put a spool in it gets MUCH lighter.

I bought a complete dana 60 at the wrecking yard for $75. I made a jig to narrow up a dana and install 8-3/4 ends. Cost $0 ( I work cheap for myself). E-bay 4.56 gear set, E-bay spool, E-bay bearing, seal, and shim kit. Cost ~$335. Moser custom axles. Cost $440. Total $850 Dave

Machined out 2, 1" steel plates the same diameter as the carrier bearings and 2, 1" steel plates the same diameter as the axle bearings. Drilled them out to 1-1/4". Used a piece of 1-1/4" steel shafting to slip through them and line everything up. Dave
