Fair enough. Just wish it was at least advertised as such so I know what to expect.

I don't have an original to go by, but I think there should be some kind of slots (not sure what they're for) drilled out on the backside?

See Gene's:

And an original's (I assume):

Yes that is an original. When adding the grilles and other parts to a reproduction bubble its usually best to align the actual parts before adding holes etc. to get the best alignment.

As an aside, does Jerome Verbit still make Shaker Grilles?

I have a pair of OEM ones, but I need another pair, and haven't run across OEM ones in a long time for sale.

Gene I think offers them, and I bought them, but they were seriously unfinished and it'd take a ton of work to make them look good, so I just returned them.

I bought what few sets Jerome had left a few years back, he's no longer offering them, as well as the blowrim steering fish center caps, his health is at issue,...same with Gene G. he's slowly closing up shop from what I hear/see,...Ben Snobar's grilles are about your only choice right now, not as nice as Jeromes, but way better than Gregory's... I agree Gene G's grilles need a ton of work to look decent, that's why you can't sit and wait on repro stuff, hoping it will get cheaper, or better,...what happens is it just disappears, then your really up the creek looking/settling for anything, and usually paying a lot more for less...

Last time I was in Six Pack Performance they had a couple of bubbles on the shelf, they looked good and were painted in what looked like organisol.

They are to allow water to drain.
Gean's have them, they just have to be filed out.
Drill bits, sandpaper, flat and round files are your best friends when trying to prepare one of his scoops for grills and doors.
Plus you must have low levels of frustration and ample time on your hands.

Terry's advice can also be used on children as well!
