The guys that I know that ran it on drag week love it but I just couldnt lay out $2900+ for one so I went with the 518 with some mods done on it(so I could use a high stall conv)

I have the trans that is fresh, that John Cope built for me...and I have a fresh 9 1/2" converter with a 4400 stall for the street...I haven't installed the gears yet which are 4.57's for the 9"...
the rear tires are 32" and I may go larger..I will be driving the car on the street and maybe a trip or two down the track...maybe I'll see you at drag week if I can over come diabetes that sorta makes me want to black out with a helmet on during hard acceleration..LOL
anyways..I was debating on changing the rear gear for something a bit in the 4.10 range or even higher..and with an OD unit, I could drive it anywhere...
thoughts??
I went with a 4.10 gear in a 9"... I am running a 295/55 tire and with the conv slippage and the OD I should be tuning 2900 - 3000 at 75mph

Yes, the GV is ex$pensive, also the OD ratio isn't as slow as the 518 (69%). 518 advantage: lock-up converter. Also: Shorter driveshaft means more pinion angle change. Drive-shaft speed is not reduced by OD, so very high MPH is a bit dangerous.
Re: makes me want to black out Easy + cheap cure: inflatable weight-loss pants (eBay), uses air pressure to compress the legs and thighs - this is where the blood goes on hard G, starving the head. Test pilot/astronaut suits do the same thing, but they aren't cheap!

For the price of a GV, why not have a 4L80E built and use a JW bell. Sell the 727 stuff and you'd probably have less cash outlay than the 727 GV setup. You will have to alter the trans tunnel some, but the car looks to have some alterations already. With the 4L80E, you can have a lockup converter built and still stall where you want it, use manual control or transbrake , or computer controlled shift points, firmness, etc.

For the most part I like mine. I don’t like the drive line angles and it disengages hard during down shifts at speeds. What helps is to lower the body on the rear axle as much as you can and modify the trans x-brace, which you have to do anyway to fit their tailstock. Up shifting isn’t very responsive but I might be expecting too much when comparing it to the regular shifts from my Griner valve body. The driveshaft tunnel also has to be dimpled to fit the GV (e-body). The parasitic loss is noticeable! Don’t have any good numbers on how much, though. Can drive 75-80 at a little over 2,000 RPM’s (28” tire, 3.55 gears)… probably going to switch to 3.90’s over the winter. If DW comes back East next year I’m planning on participating. But the rumors I’m hearing is that it will be in the Midwest again????

angles and dangles I'm not worried about because it will all be a custom fit..the engine will be set back as far as possible and I will use a mid plate.. cutting the tunnel is no problem, I have to refit the firewall/tunnel area anyways for the bell housing/mid plate fit.. here's another deal..I do have a highly modified TH400 that has a trans brake and all the goodies..has the JW bell and I have a 2 piece converter..I really would like to sell that setup..I have it in the for sale section.. the GV is about 2700 bucks...what would it cost to go with a complete 518 set up that would be able to handle 850+hp?? also what would be the cost for a complete 4L80E w/the JW bell.... those are all options...but since I have the 727 that can handle all the HP I can throw at it, and looking at the GV dimensions which are 12 1/4"L x 3 1/4" radius and the adapter must be 18"..so yes it will be close to 13" longer.. or do I try and sell everything I have and by a Tremec 5 spd or that Godzilla thing and go stick...there's around 4-5 grand problem is..finding buyers for the stuff I have if I go another route.. the CRT built trans is over 3k...and in his catalog, the same trans is around $3,600 without the converter.. its all decisions..but I do have a working system..and why I would like to go with an overdrive is so I can keep a descent gear in the rear... or I can swing another way and go Pro-Touring, 6spd, sell the rear I have complete for a wider one and go that route..

I didn't see that claim made, which is just as well - it's not true. Gears spinning in an oil bath requires no power? Impossible.
The gear splitting feature is not limited to their product, it derives from the fact that their shallow OD ratio (.78:1) is closer than any automatic transmission's internal ratios.
The power loss through a transmission is NEVER a fixed percentage of power transmitted, and if it were 23% you'd know about it because it would be on fire.

The OD on the 518 is a heavy piece but it also goes .69 OD which I believe is the most on any OD.... plus if I want I can leave it in OD and start out in first OD, which I will likely leave the OD on all the time except when racing

best advice in the whole thread ... most guys wont even need a 4L80E and can get away with a 4L60E ...will handle 600 hp and 600 ft lbs for about 1800 bucks add a JW bell and controller for $600 more and have it all ...

A non-LS 4L80E will have the same bell housing pattern as your 400, so save the bell, and sell the 400 and converter on racing junk or Yellow bullet. Sell the 727 and converter, and you just might have some change in your pocket when it's all done.

Poor choice of words on their part, I think what they're trying to say is there is no parasitic loss from released clutch packs like in the factory OD's.

Very little difference in price between 4L60 & 4L80.... PLEASE do yourself a favor & get the 80 the first time around, this coming from a guy thats owned a few 4L60-equipped LS1 F-bodies. Other than that little note excellent advice.
