I took the rallye wheels off my 4 wheel drum brake, 1971 charger parts car and found the remains of the red paint on the drums. I thought I would share the pics to see if its helpful to anyone. Here they are

I don't know if these are helpful at all but I figure I would post them because maybe to someone they are.

No problem, I was interested to see that the studs looked like they were completely painted.

I don't know that's interesting. This car had sat since 1979 and has 64,xxx miles. I found paint on all 4 of the rallye wheels. Im just trying to pass along some details people look for in original cars.

Hello A few pictures of my 1970 Road Runner Six Pack Car! There was some red paint on both axles! I have a instruction sheet from Frank that shows you where to paint the drums.Frank also sells the paint! (sixpackfrank@aol.com

I figure just like any human made thing in a factory enviroment, it was probably done different from person to person and shift to shift. They most likely had some sort of guide/print to go by but was probably not looked at too closely. The lug nuts being painted when they where not supposed to be was likely. It is still original. Just comments from a newbie.

The diagram below states a 2" wide band of paint and no paint allowed on the studs or the wheel mounting surface. In the real world of mass production I'm sure "sloppy" ruled.

So what was the purpose of having them painted red in that area? I think that will look really weird on my charger that has the road wheels with the disc option in the front. Only the rear drums would be painted? I think it would make the car look unbalanced.

So how did the front wheel disc brake cars get treated? Did they still apply red to the rear drums?

Yes they did, here are the rear drums on my 71 Bee, unrestored disk brake car.

It wasn't for looks it was an anti rust treatment since there were exposed areas on the drums with the ralleys and the road wheels.
