I am going to through my two cents in this as a vendor and as a racer, and I have no dog in this hunt. As a racer, my tools are your tools, if I have a part in my trailer, its your. A quart of oil or trans fluid, valve cover gasket, its yours. Just this weekend at Indy, Mark’s 65 Coronet broke a output shaft, I had one in the trailer, I gave him the shaft, then I went to his pit spot and rip the trans down and installed the shaft, I missed a 10.0 time run. Now Mark does run my trans, and is a good friend, but I would have done that for anyone. When it comes to helping out a fellow racer, I do what I can, and others have done the same for me. As a vendor, I would have done the same thing. Its better to be a George Bailey than a Mr. Potter.

and for that kind of thinking John, u have a cutomer for ever, rather then charging for the stuff u gave to help out

So....if Ben gives this part away for free and 15 more racers come over needing a small part does he give those away for free too? Guess who is the nicest guy in town and guess who eventually goes out of business?

I guess I will throw in my
I have given away numerous things over the years. I also have been told I don't charge enough to people when I sell parts or labor.
I am usually broke to show for it,and can't blame a guy when he charges for a part.
To expect someone to give a part just because someone is in need just comes off wrong to me. I am one of the last guys to ever borrow something and would fully plan on having to pay for something I need. I do believe fully in racers helping racers, but sometimes a business has to be run like a business.

being a vendor, and was a racer some time ago...here is my ...first i never understood why a "racer in need" is an excuse to get a part cheap,if not free. your wrong for calling ben out on this one...period. i have delt with him,and he seems like a very nice guy,and tries to help, and make a living also, selling parts.i always try and remember what i have in my trailer when someone announces a racer is broke, and needs XXXX. most all the outfits over there are worth more than my house, let alone the super cool racecars i see. i feel if in need,i sould try to provide as best as i can,but why should i be expected to lose money to help? yes 5.00 MIGHT have been not the exact price autozone would have charged, but it was right next door to your outfit!!! you should say your sorry, for the foolish rant, and all be friends in this sport...its really a small world we live in,[mopar drags, parts, and show]and i would rather go to the track and see friends instead of enemies.just remember it would have been a long weekend in the stands without ben's help.. ..mike...p.s. really cool challenger!!!

I need a 440" SB for my duster, can ya help me out??? Oh yeah,I would need better axles, disc brakes, bigger carb, bigger headers and a roll bar too!!!!

Ive dealt and bought some stuff from Ben a few yrs ago. Everytime I called,he would answer and talk with me about what I need and was VERY helpful!!!! If no one answered,I would leave a message and he would ALWAYS call me back.
Dude....its 5 BUCKS!!!!!!....You could of jumped in your truck, drove 5-20 miles to a junk yard or parts store, give them 10+ bucks and drive back 5-20 miles back to the track and spend a total of 20+ bucks on a part and fuel. Instead,Ben had one for 5 BUCKS and it was on your car in no time.

NO CLASS for calling himout!!!!! Its not like he cheated you or you paid him for a part and he didnt give the part to you. GROW UP!!!!!

Im like CRT.Ive been doing auto repair for over 30 years.Ive given free parts to people at times as well as free labor on small stuff.Lots werent customers either. They just needed something simple. That said Ive also run into the ones that you say check a fuse and give them one free.Next thing they want something else then something else free.Dont get me wrong most are decent. But if I ask a vendor for a part I expect to pay him.If he says here take it then even better but I dont expect it.Just expect a fair price for what I get.5 bucks to me would be dirt cheap to be able to race.Yeah Ive given stuff to people at the track and Ive also been given stuff. But I dont expect it.Rocky

I was at MMW and got tired of messing around with a torn breather
grommet, so I went over to the midway and asked Mancini if they
had one. They did but, get this....they frickin' wanted me to pay for it!

If you had come to my pit and I'd had an end for a cable, I'd have
given it to you and refused $1 if you'd offered it but, I think it's
pretty uncool to about a vendor charging you for a part you needed.

You should have been tickled to death you found one.

My thoughts are the same. I would have gave you one if I had one but if I was there as a vendor trying to make a living it would have cost you. To come on here and make a big deal out of it makes more of us think you are a D-Bag for doing so!

Looking thru this whole thread it may be a 50/50 argument on the charge a racer in need issue for a $5 part.... I think this whole deal stems more around the "what's it worth to ya" comment! IMO... Promax has the right to charge for the part! did he go about it wrong with comment and situation at hand YES. even if the whole argument was 50/50 on paper I think that is a HUGE 50/50 to the bad for Promax business wise! This thread will linger in minds/travel for a good while and prolly hurt/lose business for Promax for a $5 part! Just think if Ben would have said he ya go man no charge get your car fixed to get back in the event would have nothing but a positive for him even if the OP didn't make a huge props to promax thread! Bad business travels fast in a small MOPAR community...

First of all, from what transpired here I get the impression that you were expecting a freebee dispite the fact that you were in a jam. Personally, if I'm in a jam, money is my last concern.

What I don't understand is why, when he asked "What's it worth to you"? you answered with a dumb question instead of saying "how about two bucks". You're the one to blame for overpaying!

What if Promax hadn't had the item and you'd wandered to the swapmeet to find it. Would you have expected it to be free there?

What if you'd torn up a tire, would you expect THAT for free too? So, where do you draw the line? Ok, some folks are generous and help other racers out. But don't knock the guy who has what you need when you need it and expects reasonable payment for it.

I keep all kinds of spares parts in my trailer in case I need something in a pinch and will give or loan any of it to guys I know or get to know at a race but if I never met you before I would have no problem telling you $5.00 for that battery end. Mainly to keep you from coming back and needing some tape two wrenches a washer and some tranny fluid. I would never ask someone what its worth to them but I would sell it to you for what it would cost me to replace it.

You bought a part from a vendor, get over it.

Yea ...the whats it worth sounds rough but he may have been smiling the whole time --who knows--3000 views about small potatoes if you ask me.

Well, might as well throw my in too If I needed something to get me back on the track and went out in the vendor/swap meet isles looking and found said part I would be happy to pay and offer to pay if someone wanted to give it to me free. Maybe thats me but I dont want to owe anyone and everyone needs some compensation for their stuff. You should be grateful that you found the part and got to keep racing, now if you had won your class and Ben just gave you the part you needed in a "Major" situation would you then have gone to him and said Thanks and offered him some $$ of your winnings? Im wondering if Ben had known you were gonna bash him over $5 if he would have just put the part back in his tool box. By the way I have never bought anything from Ben but have talked with him on some parts and he seems like a decent person.

416 stroker from Nick at Compu-flow. 11.14 in full street trim. Seems like a new best every time out.
