Lers put some lifters in and check for proper rotation. Notice the lifters are marked with a red dot to indicate the amount of rotation per revolution.

Last one for now. more to follow tomorrow.
i found the water pump doesn't sit flush to the housing. the flange on the pump is too tall and needs a little work to make it fit. no problem, i'll handle that and post a few more pictures as things progress.

Here's a few more progress pic's
the water pump wouldn't sit inside the timing cover properly. I ended up chamfering the flange on the water pump (which was too tall to begine with) and then taking .100 off of it on the belt sander.

Here's a picture of the flange. It was too tall and too squared off. That seems to be a common problem on some of the4 aftermarket pumps.

here's a couple pictures of the valve covers. basically they looked pretty good on them outside, but the inside was still caked with what i'll just describe as "undesireable" material.

Here's the "after" pisture. they got hand washed and put through a jet wash cycle to make sure they were completely clean.

Basically I ended up doing the same thing with the intake manifold. I didn't want to take any chances with it since it was a used piece. It's all clean now inside and out.

about the mis-match on water pump,is that a LA timing cover with a magnum water pump?

I know the LA t-cover will swap over to the magnum block and vis-versa. the last gasket set I had I noticed the t-cover gasket was the same for both blocks. 1 bolt hole is different location.IIRC

water pump gasket was 2 different styles and looked like they would not swap.

so would a little machine work be the fix for mixing the LA/magnum WP and t-covers?

Mike, the timing cover came off of a 1983 318. The water pump is an aftermarket piece for pre-magnum engines. It's made by PRW.
