Am I seeing things, or is the bushing in that mount junk?

I agree, Looks like all the weight is smashing it down almost grounded to the bolt going through it.

That could be it. If its a motor plate car, its putting stress everywhere.

Well since no one answered your question as to what caused it, I will tell you what caused mine to break.
The rear end twist's up when applying torque to it.
In my case I didn't have a pinion snubber or traction bars, also weak leaf springs.
This allowed the rear to twist enough that the drive shaft would break the tail shaft housing because of the mis-alignment. Example( put a long pole on the tail shaft and lift up ..snap)
Do you have a snubber? how far from the floor pan is it?
Hope this helps, and yes go back through the trans. just to be safe.

x 22 on eye-balling the rear mount ... but the few failures I have seen in that area have shown clunking and thumping sounds.

ok i try to answer it,
i think he left so hard that the trans fluid filled the tailshaft up, and with the rotation of the rear shaft it build up pressure, and it had no way to vent the pressure so it had to break the rear case!!
hahhah lol

I thought if you ran solid engine mounts you had to have a solid trans mount?

I sure wouldnt... reason why is flex in the car...
if you have 2 points solid (now thats a straight line)
it can pivot BUT if you have a front plate, mid plate
and a solid trans mount, now you have 3 points which
doesnt mean its still a straight line, specially when
you induce flex... I always use a rubber trans mount
and I have never broke a tail shaft.... some guys
use the solid trans mount as a engine limiter... I
prefer to put a engine limiter on the engine(I happen
to use 2 of them)

No i asm not running a snumber and i have poly motor mounts.I am going to put a new tail shaft on it tomarrow and remeasure to make sure my drive shaft is not to long. is there a way to measure the out put shaft for straightness with out taking the trans out of the car? If not so be it i might just pull the trans.also at 125 mph in the 1/4 the car was smooth. i mean no vibration that i could tell or fill. could the drive shaft be bent enough not to fill it under power but enough to do what it did. the machine shop that change the rear joint to the 1350 said the drive shaft tested out fine.I think i am going to get a new poly trans mount for the car.i will put it back togeather and will let every one know how it does.thanks mopar65

no, u can't check the output shaft in the trans. i would disassemble the trans. have the shaft checked for straightness. as mr.p stated, make sure ur drive shaft is in the rear bushing deep enough & replace the bushing too. stay safe, seeya.

With mulitable good answers on this post, I'm going to throw my in the mix.

1. you see the shaft and the cast aluminum is almost completely sheered off in a complete circle.
2. stress from the axle twist in the upward movment pulling the drive shaft out of the trans as the motor is twisting the tork monster.
3. Time for a front plate, or solid mounts.
4. Poloy mount on the trans.
5. Snubber on the twisting 8 3/4

I have see a friend break his tale shaft in the speed "O" area and he locked up his trans and hurt the 8 3/4 to the ponit of putting in a Dana, and 2500 dollar trans.

Have that DS checked again. When I broke mine it was "supposedly" good too. Brand new from Mancinis balanced and all.

After it took out the tailshaft housing I took my shaft to a GOOD DS shop (Dynotech) not only was my "NEW" DS not balanced worth a damn, it was bent like a banana.

Just to clarify the wording a bit more here. You pushed the yoke into the tailshaft all the way and then pulled it out 1 inch for clearance? As Mr P had said, it needs 3/4 inch to travel. not 1 inch sticking out. If you didn't have this travel, it will bind and break. Many a person has fallen to this mis hap before.

I guess i am not following what you are saying. but yes if i remember right.i pushed the yolk in all the way and pulled it out a inch and then measured for my drive shaft lenght. are you saying that was the wrong way of doing it? if so what is the right way? thanks mopar65

We had our first break like that in a car with elephant ears, stock trans mount, etc and when we finally welded in a limiter to control fore and aft movement of the engine it never happened again--just my 2 cents worth--good luck getting her fixed

Exactly the same thing happened to me. I bought a really good (expensive) driveshaft. Second run, broke the tail housing. Sent the driveshaft to a driveline shop, and it was bent, and poorly balanced. They rebalanced and straightened it, no more problem.

Thank you SuperScamp for agreeing with my post.
I have seen several break from this happening, including my own.
It will keep happening too unless you limit the twisting of the rear end.(either install a snubber or some sort of traction bars.)
I have Calvert mono-leafs and Caltrac bars on my Demon.
I seen some beat up driveshafts that didn't hurt anything.
Good luck.

Solid mount the engine...but never solid mount the trans...use the Poly bushings.
Something needs to give a bit.
