The rear end is so smooth from all the rubbing and scrubbing with steel wool and dawn soap. I was surprised with all the markings that showed up condisering the only one that could be seen faintly was the "A". Probably doesn't hurt that the car spent a lot of its life in San Diego & 15yrs under a canvas tarp too. I'm guessing the orange and black markings denote 391 gears? I have a chart I can dig up about that. I never realized the diff and rear were assembled the same day though (9/14/70). The orig owner swears the trans is the original one it came with and it was never rebuilt, although he say he went through quite a few clutches! The VIN is all messed up on it, although 6bblgt was able to make out the VIN 115059 I knew it was messed up when I bought it and but its not a deal breaker for me, the car is what it is. Its going back in that way, and won't get restamped

Based on that I'd guess it's your original trans. It's not likely that someone hunted down a replacment with the right assembly date back when that car was on the road Post a nice clear pic of your engine stamping as well as your body stampings if you have them (or just e-mail them to me if you prefer) I can probably offer you some further info on the trans stamping if you do. *Also, can you post a pic of the date codes on your Rallye wheels? (dates are stamped right near the valve stem holes) Do they all have the same dates or not?
