Which do you prefer for cooling on your non-stock muscle car? I switched to a Flex-o-lite flex fan after having some 90 degree+ hot weather cooling issues. My clutch fan wasn't doing the job anymore and now the engine temp is running 20 degrees cooler in the hot weather. I'm sure it was going bad or just worn out.

After I saw the flex fan come loose and shear away from the shaft on my friends El Camino and damage the underside of his hood, his heaterbox hoses and gouge other parts of the block....The idea of putting one of those in my engine bay went out the window. If the hood was open someone would have been seriously injured....This was back in 1999...and the quality of those cheap fans ain't gettin any better. I used the shroud, the 7-blade with the thermo clutch along with a pusher fan, no problems.

I hate flex fans as I always seem to cut my fingers on them. I don't like clutch fans either because when they go it's by by radiator. I have used one of these on my last 3 440 cars. They work great and are very light. (and cheap)

How do these perform in a street car that sees some idle time in traffic?
no issues. I always run a shroud. All 3 cars stayed at 180* or below. I think my old 67 got up to 190 a few time but as soon as you start to move it would drop. I drove this car to the track and raced all day and it didn't get above 180...

Sounds like I may try one out. I am looking for a lighter alternative to my H.D. Stainless flex fan. I do not run a shroud and my car only creeps to about 190ish in traffic so I think my system is good. Like said, I just want a lighter fan.

get a shroud! P.S. you'll need a spacer. I think mines a 1" or 1.5"
I currently run a spacer. The fan is about 5/8" of an inch from the radiator.

who have tried the performance 5 blade clutch ..i have heard it works excellent?
The MP fan package is the same as a 80's 5th avenue/Diplomat fan. I replaced the solid 7 blade fan with one in my Mirada and it solved my overheating in traffic problem.

the stock 7 blade clutch fan was discontinued on some big block cars due to overheating at highway speeds.(i think the Daytonas) the replacement in '70 was a mech 7 blade fan. who have tried the performance 5 blade clutch ..i have heard it works excellent?
I've got the MP thermal clutch and "low drag" 5 blade fan and it does work very well. Cools a 496 "B" with AC. With AC running and long idling at 95+ degrees - say 15 min - it will warm up to 205. As soon as I get moving its back down to stat temp of 180. I have a bigger 7 blade fan from a '78 B engine Cordoba as backup but don't need it. The rest of the setup is: Mancini Muscle Car aluminum downflow radiator, shroud, MP HV water pump with anti cavitation plate overdriven about 7% and 180 degree high flow stat.

Thermal clutch fan + shroud. Works great.
I've been running a factory thermal clutch and a 5 blade fan, though I really should get a shroud on the radiator just in case. I've driven in 100 degree weather and the car never overheats, though it will run hotter than at night. Wait...I'll clarify: Nights here in Sacramento are far cooler than nights in Tucson or Scottsdale AZ. I was there last summer and it was 99 degrees at 11:00 PM !!

Frankenduster I agree.Only fan I ever saw or had break was the stocker on my 65.That was when it was only 5 years old.My wife went to start it and bang.Blade sheared off.Took out the rad and nothing else.Flex fans are just like the clutchers. They can break anytime.Ran one on my old plow Jeep for probally 10 years. It had more miles than I care to remember.Rocky

.. the Hayden 2765 or four season 36944 clutch units are about 2.6".....anybody try one, they're actually for an XJ6.
Thats what I run, it works ok but I'm not quite sure it locks up as well as I'd like it to.
