Hi All,
I was trying to fix a leaky Accelerator Pump on the center 2-bbl on a '70 440-6 setup. I purchased the new upper steel fuel lines already in anticipation of having problems with the existing fuel lines.

But, I am having all sorts of trouble now trying to get the existing lines off the carbs in order to remove them. I first tried loosening the lines for the front and rear at the fuel inlet on the carb. But the inlet adapters in the carb just turned with them. I can't possibly get another wrench in there to hold them still.

I next tried removing lines at the brass "T" blocks in the line -- but only one of them will budge. And in the process I twisted the line to the rear carb

Question #1 - Can I spray something like PB Blaster or Liquid Wrench on these fittings safely? I would generally never think of spraying stuff like this near the carb, but these things are totally stuck and no amount of force is getting them to move.

Finally, I tried putting the lines I had loosened up back in place to at least be able to move the car, but then it started leaking pretty heavily at both the front and rear carbs inlet (where I was trying to loosen early but it only spun on me). I still can't get them to move one way or the other at this point, but I must have done something to get them leaking like this.

Does anyone have any suggestions on what I can try next with this? This was my first attempt at carb removal ... a lot of lessons learned here I guess.

Thanks a lot for any ideas!

If you are replacing the lines anyway, cut them (large side cutters?) at the fuel line fitting, then use a 6 point deepwell socket to get the line fittng out of the carb fitting.

Yeah, it's hopped up to over 160...

Ok, thanks.

Does anyone know whether it's ok to spray something like PB Blaster on the fuel line fittings to see if they might budge that way? Or will this stuff possibly be dangerous?

Thanks!

To stop the inlet adapters from turning I had to wedge a large flat head screwdriver along the left side of it and the carb body.

Ok, thanks for the info on this. If I need to cut the steel fuel lines in some spots (in order to get the carbs off the motor), what is the best way to do this?

I don't see enough room to get a hacksaw in there. Is there another way to cut these fuel lines easily? Has anyone ever had to do this?

I sprayed down the nuts with PB Blaster but they still won't turn at all.

Thanks!

I would just let the inlets turn. then when they off
you can put a wench on them. I've had to that way. I've had 4 six pack cars and each was bit!h to take off.

are you using a line wrench? those are made just for taking off soft brass fittings.

I sprayed down the fitting nuts to the fuel blocks with PB Blaster, but I can't get them to budge at all. I don't know how they could have been put on there so tightly, but I just can't move them. Yes, was using a 1/2" flare wrench on this.

Also, when I tried to start up the car, I have a pretty good leak going at the carb fuel inlets now. I guess all the turning (of the fitting at the adapter) caused it to spring a leak... uggh...

I'm not sure what to do next on this... Can't unscrew the lines at the carb inlet or at the fuel block "T's". Has anyone had to resort to cutting the steel fuel lines to get the carbs off the car? If so, how did you do it? There isn't enough room for a hacksaw....

Thanks guys!

Hey Guys,

I did some searching on the web ... looks like there is a Mini Pipe Cutting device that might work for cutting my steel fuel lines at the carb?? (looks like it's also used for brake lines)

Has anyone used this to cut the steel fuel lines? I am not sure how thick or strong these lines are. Anyone done this before?

Thanks!

Now you know why 4 bbl carbs became very popular with the early six pack owners. I built a rubber fuel line and brass hose fitting set up for tuning purposes for this very reason. I eveb tried some anti sieze on the flares to get them to stop cinching up to no avail. The only way I've found to stop the inlet fitting from spinning is to use a small pair of needle nose vise grips to hold the fitting while turnig the flare nut with a tubing wrench. Takes little practice but works. Whoever did the deseign of the sixpack carb spacing should be taken out and

I did exactly the same thing twisted my fuel line.
I purchased a new fuel line and bought the right size pipe wrench spanner. For the carb side i got a spaner that fit on it and then went to work with a grinder and ground the spanner down to fit,
I now have my own home made tool for the job.
You will need to do this if your changing your jets or power valve around a bit.

Thanks a lot guys for the answers. I'll need to check out some tools to get these fittings off the carb it looks like.. Though I might have to start with the tubing cutter if nothing else works

Now, for the leak (pretty substantial now) that I seemed to have caused by trying to loosen the fittings at the front and rear carb ... Has this happened to any of you guys? I can't tighten (or loosen) the nuts now anymore, though I did put a good twist in the rear's fuel line. I can't get them to stop leaking now.

Does this sound like something that the new fuel lines I'm replacing with will help, or might I have damaged the fuel inlet adapters in the carbs by trying to turn the nuts on the lines? If so, I'll start looking around for replacemnts of those as well to be prepared.

Thanks much all for your help with this!

buy a set of LINE WRENCHES if you dont already have a set. they are INVALUABLE for removing LINES

Well, mine turned also and they were new. But I still went ahead and got the Promax line for mine. You can actually take any one of the carbs off and leave the lines attached to work on them. That's cool.

Any chance you can post a photo so we can see what you're talking about? I think I know what they are...

think of a 6 point box end wrench with a slot cut thru it for inserting it over the line. The slot is typically a little smaller than one on the HEX sides so you get maximum grip on the fitting

Hey ... On those Promax Braided Lines ... How difficult is the install for them?

Specifically, can you just use your stock lower metal lines (the one that rounds the distributor) or do these lines go all the way down to the fuel pump/vapor separator?

Also, on the fuel inlets to the Carbs -- how do the Promax lines fit in there? Do they have new adapters or screw into the existing stock type ones?

Thanks a lot!

line wrenches wont make a bit of difference. its the big fitting in the fuel bowl that starts to spin and its hard to hold them in place.

use a small tubing cutter and just put the new lines on. the line to the rear carb goes on one way. one end is stightly longer then the other and could make you crazy if you dont notice it. put the lines together hand light till its all back in place then tighten everything down

if your acc pump is leaking, i would really consider doing a rebuild on all three carbs while your at it

Not difficult....but I didn't try using factor stuff. My whole fuel system is custom, so.............
