I have a 71 Road Runner. With the steering shaft hooked up to the steering chuck/spline shaft there is about 1/4-1/2 of slop when you turn the steering wheel either way before the splined shaft on the steering chuck even begins to move. Is this normal or should the parts that are in the greased (4 inch metal connector) that goes onto the splined shaft have no play in it at all? I watched the parts in this 4 inch metal connector, where the greese is turn loosely 1/4-1/2" before they start to get tight. All parts have just been rebuilt from steering wheel all the way down including the steering chuck so there is no old worn out parts.

Thanks,

Wizard

The coupler should pivot around a little, but should have NO rotational slop. Sounds like it,s assembled wrong or worn.

Wizard, The shoes in the coupler are turned in the wrong direction. You'll have to take it back apart.

I agree. When I had my steering box gone through the mechanic did the same thing. I took it apart, turned the shoes the right way. No more slop.

Okay, is there a certain way the shoes should go in? Been awhile since I rebuilt this thing. Is one side of shoes curved? If so which way would they go in the coupler?

the curved side goes toward the shaft and the flat sides to the outside.

Also they go " the wide way", barely fitting into the groove in the coupler.

I would ditch it for an aftermarket coupler.
The firm feel piece is pricey but works very well.

The stock piece has worked fine in hundreds of thousands of cars for many millions of miles yet you feel it needs to be replaced... When assembled correctly they work fine......

Are you sure this is the way it goes together? Jules the Wiper man says different that it is the other way. Flat side goes against the steering shaft, cured up against the coupler sides.

Which is correct??

Guys invest a few bucks and purchase a shop manual.
It will pay itself 100 times over.
See pic.

just because something works doesn't mean there isn't room for improvement.

Is there only 1 shoe spring for the shoes as shown in the picture from manual here?

Just one spring-clip as shown in image. It loads the assembly a little snugly during assembly by design.

Don't forget to pack that coupler with grease.

If you ever owned a mid seventies thru 93 dodge 4x4, you would know all about these things.

Where can I buy one of these new springs? Mine is missing. Didn't get one in my rebuild kit. I tried R/T specialties on line but didn't see any. Maybe best to call. Don't really want to use a used one.

I believe the last dealer kit had it all(except coupler body). It had 2 shoes, 1 roll pin and 1 solid pivot shaft, orange seal and tin cover, along with little 1/8" pin and the spring clip dealy.
