All I have ever had were low deck motors. Except for the Hemi which was a 572" and IMO was an underachiever for sure. Even when we built a replacement for it it was a slug. I have been impressed enough with them over the years that I tend to stick with them. But now that I am at elevation I am thinking of going BIG...
IMO keeping the bobweight down is a key to me. I have had 6 of these things and we haveALWAYS tried to keep the bobweight as low as possible. Current engine is the same way, although it has a bigger for at 4.501 with less stroke than a 511".

I am consistantly impressed with the power that I see some of these low deck strokers making. What is the secret that makes these things so good cid to hp output? Do they work better in lighter cars? Just want some input since these intrigue me.
Better MOI due to lightweight pistons. Less piston weight, less crank weight, better moment of inertia. Brian
This was my thought also....all in the rotating assembly. Must be good rod ratio also. They seem to rev great.

4.380 bore x 4.250 stroke, 6.535 or 6.635 rod..
9.98 deck..
Chris..
So there is a good reason that KB makes their block available in 9.98 deck?

Typically a low deck will have about 200G lower bobweight. Everything is shorter and lighter and the energy is concentrated closer to the crank centerline.
All else being equal the center of gravity is lower in the chassis as well. Even the little things add up like the smaller bearing surfaces which reduce friction, plus the pushrods wind up being .75" shorter so thats 12" less (almost 2 pushrods worth of) mass.
Those are all great points. Who on here prefer the low deck over an RB?

Wow! I would have guessed 540". At 572ci, that is still a 4.5" stroke right? Seems that would take alot of clearancing to work. I still think 4.5" bore is the most using an aftermarket block.

Ron you can use the low block with a raised block intake if you use B1 or Stage 6 heads.
Getting old just means you were smarter than some and luckier than others.
